Leichardti Arowana
Scleropages leichardti

Size: 2’
pH: 6.8-7.5
Tank size: 300G/Individual
Country of origin: Australia
Diet: Most dry, frozen, and live foods of an appropriate size will work
Temperament: Dependent on the individual. May be able to cohabitate with large, robust tankmates. Males are very territorial.
Temperature: 75-85° F

Description

Scleropages leichardti is perhaps one of the rarest arowanas in the aquarium trade. They, along with the jardini arowana, Scleropages jardinii, are the closest legal alternatives that aquarists in the United States have to the Asian arowana, Scleropages formosus, one of the most beautiful, sought-after, and expensive freshwater fish in the world, especially throughout Asia. Scleropages leichardti, curiously, is cited as a threatened species in Indonesia, a country in which, despite sharing many native fish with Australia, does not contain any known populations of leichardti.

Love these fish! My uncle use to have one when i was a child that would come up and let you pat it!
Thinking about getting one in a couple years, when i have a tank available.

Linkei Licorice Gourami
Parosphromenus linkei

Size: ~1”
pH: 3.0-6.5
Tank size: 5G/Pair
Country of origin: Indonesia, particularly Borneo
Diet: Live and frozen foods
Temperament: Peaceful, though slightly territorial among own species
Temperature: 70-80° F

Description

Parosphromenus linkei is a very rare licorice gourami that is incredibly difficult to find in the aquarium trade. These sensitive fish require a very low pH and very placid tankmates, if any. Best kept in a blackwater environment. Could possibly be kept with other licorice gourami species. They share a habitat with Parosphromenus opallios in the wild.

Saw a video of the habitat where these come from. For those who like biotopes, these licorice gouramies cohabit with:
Betta edithae
Boraras merah/brigittae
Desmopuntius rhomboocellatus/pentazona
Trigonopoma gracile
Rasbora sp.
Sundadanio axelrodi
Sphaerichthys osphromenoides/selatensis
Hemirhamphodon tengah

African Freshwater Pipefish
Enneacampus ansorgii

Size: 5”
pH: 7.0-8.0
Tank size: 20G/1 small group
Country of origin: Countries throughout Africa’s western coast
Diet: Tiny live foods. May be able to be weaned onto frozen foods
Temperament: Easily outcompeted. Best kept either in a species tank, or with very small and peaceful tankmates.
Temperature: 75-80° F
sg: 1.000-1.005

Description

It’s that time of year again, and this time, for the Christmas of 2021, I have chosen a very vibrant pipefish by the name of Enneacampus ansorgii. These seahorse relatives are one of only two members of the genus Enneacampus. This species is very short, peaceful, and thin, and therefore makes an excellent choice for a nano species tank-- just so long as you are able to meet their demanding care requirements. Good tankmates include members of the genuses Badis, Brachygobius, and Elassoma.

South American Freshwater Flounder
Trinectes hubbsbolli

Size: 5"
pH: 7.0-8.0
Tank size: 40G/Individual
Country of origin: Colombia
Diet: Live and frozen foods
Temperament: Peaceful, may be bullied by larger fish
Temperature: 75-80° F

Description

Trinectes hubbsbolli is a very unique flatfish in the sense that, unlike almost all of the other species, they are truly freshwater. My findings do not show that they even so much as enter brackish or saltwater in the wild. This species is very closely related to the hogchoker, a North American flatfish that is often marketed as freshwater, though in reality requires brackish water to survive long-term. These fish require a fine sand substrate to burrow. Harder substrates such as gravel may damage their delicate skin. (Yes, I am aware that the one shown in the photo above is most definitely not on fine sand. Pictures were scarce, okay? It was the best one I could find.)

Also, btw, lots of these pics were originally cropped on the doc these profiles came from to hide logos, and make oddly-formatted images fit in better. Apparently it doesn't really translate when I copy+paste them into MFK. My apologies

Bowfin
Amia calva

Size: 30"
pH: 6.0-7.5
Tank size: 200G/Individual
Country of origin: United States, Canada
Diet: Live and frozen foods
Temperament: Aggressive, may tolerate similarly-sized fish-- though, this is not advised with most tankmates
Temperature: 60-75° F

Description

Amia calva, despite somewhat resembling a snakehead, is actually much more closely related to gars. This fish’s genus, of which it is the only extant species, is very primitive, and has existed for tens of millions of years, meaning they would have lived alongside some of the later non-avian dinosaurs.
