Y’all are talking way more work than a water change. I don’t know that our hero is the one for it.

To be fair….Wait...what?
You mean you haven't already drilled holes in the structure of your home simply to make aquarium maintenance easier?
How quaint!![]()
How to never “clean” a tank… set up an autodrip system. I havent done a physical water change in almost 10yrs on 10+ tanks 180-650gal. 100%+ tank volume is replaced weekly. I dont even have hoses anymore for a physical water change ?. I clean filters maaaaybe once every few yrs. Usually just when im changing stock around or “for fun” as good measure. If the tank is “dirty” u can just turn the drips up and buy yourself years of “cleaning” even ??. Only other option as others have stated are heavily planted tanks.
Any chance you have a thread on ur autodrip system? I'm very curious about this...
Tank water is warm… itell keep ur lines unfrozen IMO… i live in Ohio and my 4” 100’ PVC line has no issues in winter. Its a mere 6-12” underground and it melts the snow on the ground above it… my tanks are only kept at 70-72 degrees as well. Since its running 24/7 theres no worry of freezing. My “line” is intermittent also running with a sump pump every 30 minutes or so. Worth a shot for ya to try. Will def. Change ur life lol… makes the hobby much more enjoyable and highly improves quality of life for ur fishy friends… win win lol ??
Sadly no, set it up initially back in 2012… basically its just an ice maker kit from the hardware store, 1/4” poly tubing, push connect fittings and drip emitters intended for sprinkler systems for the water supply. The drains/outflow are all just drilled sumps. Really not much to it. Most all the parts can be had from the local hardware stores. Many many ways to setup ur water supply but the ice maker kit is probably the easiest. Pulls water right from any copper line in ur house. I modified my ice maker tap ins after a few yrs for more flow and also installed a pressure guage with ball valve i can regulate the lines with but the ice maker kit will get u goin and understanding the process. Hardest part to it is drilling ur sumps. Easy enough tho also. Maybe ill put a thread up. Theres alot of info on here if u dig enough.
Interesting.... I'm gonna do some research on this.... How do I go about commissioning you to come build me one of those boss metal tanks down here in Florida. Got a whole extra room for one. ??
Does that work in the subtropical paradise of Ohio?It sure ain't gonna work here! Northern Florida is at 30 degrees north latitude...Ohio straddles 40 degrees north...and I am just a hair over 50 degrees north.
The warm tank water keeps the line open as long as it is running at a fair clip, powered by the utility pump that is plumbed to all my tanks in the basement. The outflow steams like a natural hot spring.![]()
Once you turn off that pump, at -40C you have only a few minutes before the hose becomes very stiff and difficult to coil up. Get distracted by a phone call or something in the fish room, forget the hose for a half hour, and it will literally snap into pieces like an icicle when you try to pick it up. Been there, done that, have way too many hoses that are mended together with multiple couplings and hose clamps.
Back in Ontario, my last house was on the side of a hill, so the exhaust pipe was at a fairly steep angle and would almost always drain completely before freezing up. Here, it's much colder, the snow is deeper, and the required angle of the drain pipe is so shallow that it takes forever for all the water to dribble out. No es bueno. I can't be pumping hundreds of GPH out of my well and through my tanks just to keep the lines thawed...as wonderful as that would be for my water quality...sigh...![]()
