It’s finally happening, but it’s actually happening

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Im digging out the first layer, and then after we’ll decide if it’s big enough. I’ve been tossing the dirt up against the fence for now, but in the corner, it’ll be piled up. The pond is extending another 4 feet to the left, and is extending 2 feet towards the fence. It’s roughly 9’x5’

I’ve gotten through the easy part of the gravel, but now I need to scoop out half dirt half gravel, and attempt to get all the pieces out.

These thorns have been killing my feet. I normally wear shoes out at the dog site where the Bogonvilla was, but I somehow manage to step on them everywhere. I’ve gotten 3 on my right heel and 2 on left foot. They are all about the size of my finger nail, maybe a little bigger. I can’t walk very well, so haven’t dug in a couple days.

Ya know...a bit less time posting on MFK, and a bit more time playing the banjo...i.e. wielding the shovel...and this project would be a done deal.

I hand dug my 9 x 15 foot pond, between 30 and 36 inches deep, in three fairly relaxed days in the autumn of 2015. Another day to sculpt the contours of the bottom, lay down old carpeting for padding, install the liner. And, yes, we have heavy clay below about 15 inches. Then two more days of schlepping about 800 feet of hose into my back field to the natural pond, extending it down to the new backyard excavation, and carting my generator and pump out to the natural pond to start moving water.

It's amazing how much you can get done when you aren't stopping every ten minutes to post about how little you're getting done. :)

It's also helpful to use some of the latest and greatest technology to assist you and make the job safer and easier; I'm talking about high-tech innovations like workboots for your tender tootsies and maybe a pair of gloves in case you pick up any tools at some point. :)

C'mon, pick up the pace, Tiger. At the rate you're moving, half the species you are considering will have gone extinct by the time your pond is full.

It amazes me that you can be funny, serious, informational, and judgy in one post lol. Unforeseen variables…family…friends…not much time, or not as much as I would’ve thought. Here is my sifting process. I spray the gravel down and the dirt/small pieces collect at the bottom. Water drops out of a hole at the corner and into a bucket which I use to water the plants or toss in the pond for easier digging.

What is the purpose of all this?

And sarcastic! Don't forget sarcastic! :)

But, of course, I hadn't realized that you were apparently panning for gold while digging your pond...

And, seriously...what are you wearing on your feet, such that a couple thorns grind you to a halt? This is work; it demands proper safety gear.
