The logic is simple, no matter the subject matter, or person posting. At some point someone in internet land is going to read this discussion for research, educational purposes, or whatever, and not care who the OP is/was, or if they are a troll, or are sincere in their quest. I suspect that most people land on MFK for the info supplied. Not saying that derails shouldn’t be allowed, or that they even distract the average reader. My point is that ignoring comments, even those made by mental midgets, is typically not in the best interest of the forum.

The forum purists who never deviate from the original subject matter must be wetting themselves in eager anticipation of what's to follow, lol.

Incidently, I've been on forums in the past where there have been extremely strict rules preventing the original subject matter from swaying too far off topic. If that was the case on MFK we'd be constantly getting warned!

Maybe there should be a change along those very lines. After all, the last thing some guy from a far off future generation wants to see when he does a search on the MFK archive, is a thread with us goons talking absolute crap about something that has nothing to do with the original thread title, lol.

I'll agree to disagree. Censoring or removing comments regardless of their source might be construed as a negative thing, depending upon who is reading them and for what reasons, because they are then removed from being viewed by anyone. The Ignore feature doesn't remove anything, and doesn't prevent anyone else from...ahem...deriving whatever benefit they can from the comments that may be Ignored by one individual.

For an individual to Ignore another...doesn't detract from the forum as a whole, in fact doesn't affect it one way or the other. The only person being affected by this in any way, good or bad, is the person attached to the finger hovering over the Ignore button.

I guess that depends on who is doing the ignoring, and their overall value/quality of contribution as a member here.
I think very highly about some members, and their contributions/comments, others I couldn't give a rats arse one way or the other.
If you don't see the reasoning in that, then yeah, I guess we can agree to disagree.

I've been a member here long enough to still feel the loss of certain members from yrs back, that were either banned outright, or left on their own accord.
Sometimes experience in certain areas is difficult to replace, by simply adding on new membership.

It works both ways I think, you are both right.

The "ignorer" doesn't see any posts of the person they're ignoring. So a thread, to the ignorer anyway, would look odd, because they'd be missing content which may be essential to the continuity of the thread. But everyone else, including future browsers, would see the thread in its entirety, as John said.

But RD's also right because the ignorer, due to the muddled nature of the thread, to them, would probably then choose to stay away from that thread altogether because it would be hard to follow. A thread which, under normal circumstances they maybe could have added something of value for current and/or future members.

Great...two crusty Canucks require the mediation services of a Brit, who is gracious enough to step in between the squabbling Colonials to restore the peace...

Now, I wasn't kidding when I mentioned having accidentally ignored various members a few times. I only became aware of it when they posted in a thread I was following, and a notification popped up that I was Ignoring content from such-and-such a member. It would indeed have been a confusing thread if that weren't mentioned...I've seen forums where an ignored member's posts just disappear completely and the thread becomes incomprehensible...but here, as in most places, it's obvious what has happened and it's easy to either un-Ignore the person completely, or to view just that particular post so that the conversation makes sense...or, at least, as much sense as it was ever going to make...

So a person who cares enough about the thread to potentially add something of value to it, will find it easy to do so. Someone who doesn't want to go to the trouble of even reading the hidden gems, is unlikely to bother posting at all.

At least that's how it looks from here in Manitoba!

LOL, my point was that quality information wise, the more value this site contains, the better the chance of long-term survival it has.
Yes, the easy way is to put some folks on ignore, but if the vast majority here did that this site would lose out on some very valuable contributions.
With FB, IG, Tik-Tok, Snap Chat, and whatever else the kids of today hang out on, the only thing keeping MFK alive is the quality of information that can still be found here. As it is, this site has taken some serious hits since I've been a member here, one was near fatal.

It has zero to do with someone missing a thread, or content. That's their choice. I was thinking more of the BIG picture.

I think for the longevity of this forum, it would help to make this a place where beginners and/or kids can come and ask “dumb questions” without the risk of being personally attacked or actually being considered “dumb.”

Seen plenty of forums with their wealth of info turn into a wasteland with a dying membership and a handful of experts that still stomp around and scare everyone off.

Everyone started off with community fish before stuffing an oscar in their small tank and eventually go off running to find help. Help them…let the kids ask questions and steer them in the right way kindly.
