what about an fx5 with my emperor 400

A single fx5 can filter your setup with no issues and still have some overhead.

It's always a good idea to split the filtration with additional filtration in case something goes wrong with one of them. That's why it's recommended a second filter that can handle the mech and bio filtration on it's own if your primary filtration has an issue.

thank u all its jsut ive read plenty of threads with people with like 2 fx5s and 2 400 emps on a 150 and only 2 jaguars a bicher and a gt so i thought it was required but thank u all

without media, it turns 900 gallons per hour, but I doubt you would run it without any media in it...that'd just be a waste of resources.

Don't assume the flow rate when I have tested it.

900 GPH is all about marketing. The is the flow of the pump no the filter.

I would never feel comfortable with just one on that tank. The FX5 certainly CAN handle it all, and mine has just an FX5 on it as well, but it makes me nervous.

Normally I have 2 FX5s running. I took one out to seed a new tank and it has stayed there for over a month now. The one is supporting the other tank just fine but every time I feed I get nervous. Probably just paranoid, though. My stock is a black arowana, 6 eartheaters, 3 Uaru. When I had two FX5s I had a lot more fish in here.

In general it's a good idea to have a second, just as backup, extra circulation, etc. No harm in just getting the one and adding the 2nd later if you find a deal or something.

900GPH is just a zinger for markup. 900 is @ 0' head and 0 media what so ever. realistic scnerios are 550-625GPH full with probably a 4ft head on a normal setup

1 fx5 is NOT enough IMO
but i have an over filtering fetish
with 3 fx5s on my 180,
along with 1 ehiem 2075
1 ac110
and 1 xp4.

Guys.... please. Head Height has nothing to do with the flow of canisters. The water on the output side will reach the water level in the aquarium without the help of the pump.

I TESTED the fx5 without MEDIA, without BASKETS and I was at 600 GPH. THERE IS NO FX5 ON EARTH, CAPABLE OF PUMPING 900 GPH BY REMOVING THE BASKETS/MEDIA/HEAD.
