10gallon Stocking

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ok, I've ordered a mantis. Because the ordering system is two steps down from professional I got promised EITHER a Peacock Mantis or a P. Ciliata.
I'm hoping for P. Ciliata though.

you do realize the massive difference between the two right?

I for one would keep a peacock in a ten gallon for life

Yes, I realize the difference in size, habit and needs and feeding.

Did you mean would or wouldn't??
I have a 10 long which is occupied by my newts. If he looks cramped I'll switch them...and it'd be nice to have a mantis in my room instead of in the living room where my mom sprays all sorts of organic solvents...I'm lecturing my family about organic solvents right now ;D

get some pics when you put him in the tank... i wanna see :D

Sure, I definately will! Here's a few pics of the tank since Day 1 up till 1.5 weeks:

All rocks and the coral thing are collected from a rock beach. (Free).
Sand cost $4 for 5kgs.
HOB was from before.
Heater was from before.
Motor in worm ring from an ancient HOB (circulation)
Thermometer $2
Snails from rock beach
$4 of livestock: Two clarkii clowns and this...yellow...fish? Also a molly

Help me spot potential places the mantis would choose to construct a burrow. I don't want him hiding in the back corner spending it's days holed up like Saddam. I have tried to decorate so as to provide some good areas near the front and middle for a mantis to pick a burrow spot. I will put a PVC pipe near the front so hopefully he will duck into there when I introduce him and maybe he will choose to stay there.

A nice rock

My favorite rock: the chips are very nice.

Future food but for now they help cycle

n565794390_1175782_5985.jpg

I keep my brine shrimp here for my FW fish (I know the mantis will whack the thing apart later)

Overview of the tank. Note the HOB motor in the worm ring and ignore the ugly pokemon clip.

I hope he will contruct a burrow in between the gray flat rock and the front glass, down the middle in between the rocks or on the right hand side. I have decorated to encourage this.

Top view.

Finally, I need lots and lots of decorating tips. I might get some "shelf coral" live rock to make a platform over the bottom 5", above which where the mantis will rarely swim.

Thanks for your time!

Edit: One more question. Is the sand too deep or not? Some of it seems to be very tiny crushed coral. This will become live, right?

sorry, yes that was a wouldn't... a 29 or so would do for an adult.. maybe a 20L seeing as they don't use the upper parts of the tank

since either of the matids you're getting are smashers, you could try a damsel or two, see if he doens't whack him...

i'd say no live coral as they'll either knock it down constantly, break it, or use it for their burrows

the shelf thing sounds like a good plan

some of the more slowly growing macro algeas could make for a good display

the sand might be a little shallow if anything, yes it will become live over time

Okay. Well the man said the shrimp usually come in at about 3 inches, so I'll use the time between his molts to show my parents how he has superior pet qualities to a freshwater Oscar. Then I'll get my 55gal....and then everyone's happy :D

Off topic, but I don't really believe in GLASS tank sumps...it's a huge waste of a tank. Why not use a plastic tote? Is there a reason people choose to waste a good solid 10gallon aquarium for use as a sump?

Thanks for the answers again. What are macroalgaes and are they hard to maintain?

they are generally easier to work with.. skimmers and heaters and pump and such are designed to work with/stick to/hang on a solid glass frame.. not (possibly) flimsy plastic

a 55 might be a bit of a stretch lol.. a LOT of wasted space there.. unless he's cool with fish you could maybe try a school of chromis or something and some coral in the upper reaches of the tank...

actually that's looking more and more like a cool idea :D

Oh, I see...there are still ways around it but anyway,

Yeah, or are there any like, smaller puffers or boxfish that can go in a 55?
And I'll definitely be using a shelf-like piece of LR to kind of separate the top area from the bottom whe- I mean, IF, I get my tank...

yeah there a myrid of tobies and sharpnosed puffers, filefish, and smaller boxfish.. though i wouldn't go risking a fish more than say $20 in a mantis tank...

That's cool. But do they all release toxins when spooked? That's a problem...
:WHOA: Dude, I've only been doing SW for like 2 weeks! My biggest tank is a 20 gal! $20 is more than how much my friggen tank costs! The only thing that I would get for $20 is a good pla kat betta or a stomatopod....or another tank :headbang2
