12 Volt Man's Aqueon 150 Gallon Startup Thread

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
reflecting on the setup, I am pretty happy with everything in terms of hardware.

I am happy with the Aqueon tank with the black silicone, I think it is about as well built as I have seen in terms of construction/silicone work, the heating/filtration is working perfectly, I like the lighting, black gravel with black background etc.

in terms of tank size, well, I think realistically its about as big as I could have put in that room without taking up too much floorspace. Yes, the extra width of the 220 or even 180 would have been nice, but looking at the tank in the room, I really think that taking up even more floor space would not be good. I definately like the 72x29.5" viewing area, it is awesome to sit down in front of..so in a way, that would rule out the 180 for me anyway..chopping 6 inches of the top would not look nearly as good in that space IMO, even if it was wider..

I am a little dissapointed in the fin nipping -whichever fish are doing it. it sucks because the last barbs I had were in virtually perfect condition. these barbs and redhooks are not because of this, but, this is a hobby and nothing is ever perfect. esp. with livestock..

As you can probably tell from my last post, the tattered fins and missing scales is bothering me. I am actually thinking of putting slightly different stock in the tank. rather than have the redhooks and lemon fins, I am thinking of going a different route:

4 red tinfoil barbs
5 or 6 filamentosa barbs
I can probably try and put the clowns back in
a trio of severums
perhaps some bala sharks (growing up some monster balas in that tank would look pretty sharp I think)

this might not be a popular decision..lol but I might take the plunge..

this tank takes up a whole wall, and I guess I just don't want it full of fish in rough condition..

You could be onto something. I think you gotta do what you think best. I love, like yourself, striving to keep the fish in perfect health and condition. I have modded a few times due to similar problems. I have 6 large still growing balas in a tank like yours and it looks awesome! If you decide to do it, keep with the pics it is awesome to see!

That would be too bad to have to get rid of such great fish, but for a nice big tank like this, you do need to do something you'll really like looking at. I'm in a similar position with my 150. My oscar doesn't fit into my future plans for the tank, so I was going to keep him in it for a while until I could figure out where to set up my 75 for him to have by himself. Now, all of a sudden he's beating up my sev which has almost perfect fins and almost no scars, so the oscar may have to go-as much as I don't want him to.

Either way, I think your tank will look awesome

Nice tank! For in the future, groups of uneven numbers look better to humans, so 5 is better than 4, try it :)

How are the xp3's? Thinking about getting some, are they quiet?

small update. the redhooks are going to the LFS tomorrow, not sure what I am doing with the barbs just yet. its a shame that these fish chewed each other up, but what can you do. you can see just how badly some of these fish are nipped.

they are healthy, eating and growing, but all chewed up...

I have a feeling its the redhooks all along, since the barbs lack the mouth/teeth to cause these sorts of problems..

its just odd that in all the times I have spent sitting in front of the tank over the last 7 months (too much? LOL) I never saw any sign of aggression.

but the evidence is everywhere:
