120 Gallon Saltwater Tank Questions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yes I run a NWB150 in my 135g sump.

It is beast. Be warned, it's a lot larger than you think it is (that picture).

It will also run in 7" of water, which is ideal for wide configured sumps.

Yes. The footprint is 12 x 8.5 if I recall. And it uses every bit of that, so be sure your baffle is set long enough on your skimmer section of the sump.

yeah it's a big skimmer. Don't get me wrong, big is good, i went from a reef octo HOB BF100 to this thing and it's huge hehe

it keeps my 135g spotless though. :D

you can buy them as replacement parts from the manufacturer the problem is they require the bottom to be drilled and the bottoms are tempered on the All glass models. Not sure about marineland. I run a company called Envysion biosystems we specialize in custom saltwater setups. We do ALOT of these 120s lately. If you want a good yet cheap skimmer with a small footprint I would suggest a eshopps s-150 or s-220. Same design as a super reef space saver with the same pump for cheaper. As for lighting there are to many options but I suggest AquaIllumination Sol LEDs. These are the only lights we install. They have the are very controllable, very high PAR numbers and a great look, as well as super effecient and do not produce any heat. For a sump I would say on the cheap side a eshops would work for you. they are kinda loud though but that can be fixed with a little work. A step above that would be a aquen proflex. Just take out the bioballs and its actually a decent sump. My company has a range of our own Professional sumps that have many advantages over the competition but they are quite abit more than the ones I listed. There are a ton of options on Powerheads. Ecotech Vortechs are def the best and one mp40 would be sufficient but for a entry level powerheads I highly suggest Hydor Korallia pumps. They use magnets which alows them to stay put better than the competition. Honestly I wouldn't use another entry level product. The heater I would suggest a good titanium one. Trust me you dont want your heater to break and kill potentially thousands of dollars in livestock so Invest in a good titanium one. A cheap one that you could use is finnex though I suggest Blueline myself and use them the most. Get at least 500w sense you want the most consistency with a saltwater tank.
Live rock is your big investment but its your filter and the base to your reef so dont skimp. I love Real Reef rock. Its a manmade live rock that is cured before shipment so it is very much "alive" its panted purple so it has the look of coraline algae from the start. The best part is there is no environmental impact and NO pest! get at least 1lb per gallon I try to start about 1.5lbs per gallon with my clients though.

Thank you for the information it really helped.

Ok so today I ordered the RO/DI Filter from the filter guys. I also purchased (2) 250W aqueon pro heaters and enough instant ocean salt to treat 160 gallons from amazon. As for the tank, one of my local Petsmart has a 120 gallon 60"X18"X22" with canopy and light for $350. They also have a 150 gallon "48"X24"X30" with canopy, light and a under gravel filter for $530. I can order a drilled 120 gallon "48X24"X24" tank with two overflows from Petco but it only comes with the tank and overflows and costs $700. It will also take about 2 weeks to be delivered to the store. As nice as a drilled tank would be, i am leaning more towards the 120 or 150 from Petsmart and just buy a HOB external overflow box. I would like to hear what you guys think I should do. Thanks
