Yep you are correct, Silver dollars might eat a very small fish that is bite size...

Would the SD's bother something like Java Fern? Or something that floats at the top such as Crystalwort? I am really leaning towards the BGK and I will try to get an aquarium that has a nice width for it.

Option #1...

Crystalwort should be toast. Find more robust and bitter plants. Java fern is bitter <most fish leave them alone> but if one SD learns to nibble it, I don't see why the rest will not follow BUT... You can always deter them from eating plants by having to regularly feed them. This will prevent them from eating the rest of the plants if they are full. You still need to know that they will pick a leaf or two everyday which is a pain to remove every single day. This outweighs the water quality and the aesthetics of the tank though. The SDs grow huge though like 8" so a group of 6 will dwarf your tank in no time but this only a question of taste. Do not add too much decor as in driftwood. Add a single large piece arcing throughout the tank and place the Java ferns in selected areas of the driftwood. This will give SD's a lot of swimming space. Add the rocks or other plants close to the base of the arcing driftwood as hiding places for your bichirs, BGK and the rope fish which you'll never see anyway.

even if you take pool sand and put it as a bottom looks nice and is VERY cheap. also form my experience is decent for live plants.
