Hello everyone, I am getting a Free, COMPLETE 120g Saltwater tank that is running right now, and has fish in it, yellow tang, etc and it has live rock and everything. I know GREAT DEAL, i checked craigslist 2 mins after it was listed, and i sent an email and I got a response, and now I can pick it up Sunday. Any advice on what i should tank, and how long will the live rock and the fish, i was thinking giving them to my LFS and maybe getting some store credit or just giving them to them so they dont die just in case they would. I never had a SW tank and want to start it easy with just some clowns. Any adviced would be appreciated... THANKS!

congrats on the pick up

dont know anything about salt water

any advice on taking a 120g tank home, would be appreacited like what did oyu do, i am thinkinga bout taking an ice chest and some 5g buckets to take water...

take moer of the sand and rock than the water, the water doesn't really hold that much bacteria and "fresh" saltwater is just as good and easier to move.
i would donate the fish to an lfs and just let the rock run in the tank with a filter and heater untill you can gain some knowledge. it'll aslo be a great time for you to practice mixing water and testing and topping off for the right salinity.

ps you should have pyut this in the SW seaction of the forum, you'd get alot more/better answers.

okay, so keep some of the water in teh tank but mainy take out sand/rock? Will the sand/rock die if their out for like 3 hours? And what do you mean fresh saltwater, buy the salt mix and make my own? Yeah i think i will donate the fish.

yeah mostly just the rocks and the sand but put a little water in both containers just to keep them hydrated. like a quart, tops.
the sand may have some small problems but nothing to really worry about and the rock should be fine.
yeah i suggest just buying a bag/bucket (however it's sold by you) of salt and making your own, it'll save you many trips to the LFS for premade water and you can control the salinity if need be.
just keep the fish out of the tank for a while as there may be a small cycle in the tank from moving everything around and just start SLOW and simple. nothing but rocks for a week or two and then a few damsel and then clowns, stick with them for a while to gain skill and confidence and then start going for the slightly more advanced fish tangs etc.

also the tank doesnt have a protein skimmer but he said it runs fine, do I need a protein skimmer? The tank comes with canopy and stand too, I am thinking of selling all the saltwater stuff, like live rock and stuff and getting a arrowana and some driftwood and just make it an arro tank. not sure, but how long would the live rock live w/o being in water?

the rock'll live a good couple of hours out of the water and still be considered "live".
a 120 is really good for an aro for live it's just a little too small maybe if it was a 180 that'd be perfect.

well I don't think i will keep it past 24" or so... I think that if it ever got that large i would buy a larger tank or donate him or sell him. So If the live rock is 'dead' would people still buy it and be able to use it? And do you think I should go freshwater, but I really want to have clowns, I don't think i want any dificult fish saltwarer, I just want some clowns, maybe 1 yellow tank, and a voltan lionfish =D=D but I wouldn't mind going slow, and thanks for the help! I am broke now, but I get 40$ a week so thats my budget.

What do you mean about creating salt water, do I just mix regular table salt with water?
