120g Saltwater Fish Tank!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
NO! table salt and marine salt are 2 totally different things adding table salt to the tank will do them no good. istant ocean or reef crystals are the kinds of salt that would need to be used.
if your budget is only $40/wk i would suggest doing like a 20gal with just a pair of clowns.
not that SW takes alot of $$$ per month it's just expensive to set up. but if you have all the LR and the tank/stand/hood and stuff than that cuts the cost TREMEDOUSLY!!! maybe by like $1000. and all you'd really have to pay for afterwards is more water and fish food.

yeah i get 40$ a week, I am going to probably donate the fish as i dont want them to die... so what should i do when i go pic up the tank it will be running.

Are saltwater fish like freshwater, just put em in a bag and ur set. Also , do you think I need a protein Skimmer, I mean i get 40$ a mo but I have stuff that i can sell easily, and get around 80$ fast if i need it.

The tank is about 5 yrs old and the owner knew how to keep fish and he doesnt have a skimmer.

For the live rock... take it out of the tanka nd put it in a cooler? And then add some water to keep them alive? Then put them in the tank when i get home?

THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP, I have to get myself Saltwater ready by Sunday loool!

Also, what do you mean pay for water, you mean the salt mix stuff? How much is it do you think i would need for the first mix?

well i don't know how heavily he stocked the tank if it was just the one tang i don't think that it would need a skimmer, but if you intend to get more and bigger fish (like that lion :)) then i strongly suggest one.
yup bag and board
yeah just keep the rock moist so that the bacteria don't die off toomuch there's going to be a little die off but nothing to relaly worry you head off for.
i mean pay for water as in, if you dont have an RO unit in your house, paying for RO water, like at a grocery store or LFS. if you have really good city water that can work too but isn't quite the same.
if you dont have either than you can get water at most good LFS for like 50c a gallon or a dollar if it's premixed with the salt. i have a 29 gal and samller right now so that's a practical option for me. whenit comes time to change 20 gallons of water all at once and having to load the car up with water containers i would just get an RO unit. it's only like $50 and gives you really good drinking water to boot.

Does an RO unit get hooked to our plumbing? Or am i misunderstanding, our city water is excellent I think. And now that i think of it i wont be getting a heavily stocked tank, I will be adding pieces step by step and I dont think i will get any large fish until i have a skimmer, I am pretty sure the filter is W/D not sure gotta ask. And I heard a lot that with a large SW fish tank that you can mess up and it won't be as bad as a smaller tank, is this true?

Also I currently have my XP3 on my Freshwater tank, if i remove it from my Freshwater and use it on my Saltwater, would it be okay or would i have to clean everything? I know i would have to remove the water from the inside of the canister. Thanks!

If you are going to do fresh water setup, why not donate or get store credit for the live rock also? That stuff is not cheap.

I am thinking of buying a large bin about 120 gallons,a nd taking my garden hose and siphoning the water from his tank, into the bin in the bed of our truck, and then siphoning it back into the tank, would this work?
