check out rena... i have had nothing but good with them! also rena makes a sweet heater that hooks up to intake of filter.... its xp series... you can take a hammer to the heater and probably won't break... its insane!! and cheap money!! i ordered off dr. fosters... good luck with tank bro! Eheim is the best, but like you said.. your in college.. so check out rena!
Eheim is way better than fluval, but rena is bomb for the money!! look up reviews yourself.. not the best not the worst but definitely worth the money.. mine has been great. for my 150 gallon though i'm going with the top of the line eheim.. just so i can say that's what i'm running, but other than bragging rights(and to give my fish the "best"...) they all get the job done so just buy the cheapest if your tight on money..... right?

too bad the fluval losses half it's flow rate when filled with media... do some research.. it might be working, and like I said earlier all 3 will work... but what is the best? Eheim. What is the best for money? The rena... it's up to you bro, but if you do shell out cash you should do your research and spend it on the Eheim! There are a million threads on this site alone never mind the rest of the internet... fluval will work but aint worth it unless your a fanboy.....
