glad i could help... those fx5 people like but the wattage and weak gph for that wattage... theirs an eheim(twice the price of fx5) that pumps way more gph and uses half the wattage... the rena xp3 is great on my 75 and one guy runs 2 on his 150 and its great so far.. now that i have the money though i want to experience eheim.... now im not saying fluval is garbage but for the money that fx5 is by far not worth it.. if you want to save more money for the eheim you could run that 404 for a bit depending on stock.. i know a guy who ran a 404 on a 150 till he decided to sell the tank... no problems... he had a ton of fish too...

i have a eheim post going right now trying to see which one people think i should get.... lots of options and some are $$$

any questions when you set up your xp3 just pm me.. the instructions are straight forward it's not rocket science.. the tubes are clear so if your near a window, i put electrical tape around my tubes to block the sunlight.. had an aqua-clear and it was ridiculous how much algae built up with flowing water even....

****if you really want to save money run that fluval404 and go buy an aqua clear 110(i think its a 110.. the biggest they make) that should be plenty of filtration for your tank! i ran mine for 3 years until i dropped it during cleaning..lol*****

I read all of your comments this thread and you look like a big eheim fan to me. but besides what you think, the fx5 is a very dependable filter and a good "bang for your buck" and is meant for people who have a large tank but not a big enough wallet for eheim :D

o yes... i have never owned one and want to experience the eheim hype now that i have the money.... germans make great beer, great sausage, great cars... so why not try their filter?

i have owned a couple fluvals some garbage others good.. horrible tech support..

my rena like i said rocks.. their tech support is horrible though.. left message and they never called me back...lol nothing was wrong with filter(thank god) just had media questions..

so as of now im a rena fan, if i didn't want to try out the eheim so bad i would just get 2 xp3's for my new tank and call it a day. (check out the heater they make too, intake slides right into it) i don't know about other rena products but their xp series is great! just hope you don't need tech support...lol it might have gotten better by now though?

which filter has a spot to hold the heater? how does that work? that would be nice to save the wall of my tank and also I will be getting a ray so thats always nice.

it doesn't hold it.. the heater is in your tank and is hollow.. the intake tube to the filter connects to heater and acts as one giant tube... check out rena web site it is sick... lol i'm actually starting to think about picking up another xp3 instead of the eheim i want so bad because i know what the xp3 is capable of for the money...

I'll second the sump suggestion if you are cash-strapped. The ready-made sumps are a bit pricey, but it's easy to make your own. There are lots of DIY sump threads in this subforum, so I'm sure you can find one suited for your tank and skill level. A bonus is that you can put the heater in the sump and have it out of the way.

If you're figuring out how much sand you want, first figure out how many cubic inches you need: tank width X tank length X desired sand depth (all in inches of course). A standard 50# bag of sand is 1/2 cubic foot, or 864 cubic inches. So, divide your first number by 864 to see how many bags you need. You said the light is 72", so I'm assuming the tank is too (probably a 125 in that case); standard dimensions for a 125 are 72" X 18" X 22"H. So, 72X18=1296/864=1.5. One and a half bags of sand per inch of sand depth. I'm guessing you'll want fairly deep sand for your ray.

If you do get an oscar and a ray, you've already started an Amazon biotope. Something to consider when picking other fish.

finally got the tank up in my room,
pain in the ass its a whole lot heavier going up flights of stairs but its in!

pictures soon

just bought a fluval fx5!

unless you got a killer deal... to blow money on the fx5, you prolly woulda been better with eheim or a custom sump... good luck with your tank!! please tell how it holds up and take pictures!!
