too bad the fluval losses half it's flow rate when filled with media... do some research.. it might be working, and like I said earlier all 3 will work... but what is the best? Eheim. What is the best for money? The rena... it's up to you bro, but if you do shell out cash you should do your research and spend it on the Eheim! There are a million threads on this site alone never mind the rest of the internet... fluval will work but aint worth it unless your a fanboy.....

nice. It's true that fx5s aren't the cheapest anymore but about a year ago, you could get them brand new for $200. best bang for the buck then!

I have about $200 tops in my filter budget. I know the filter is a top priority so if I must I will spent a little more, depending on what I find for my other parts needed.

Fx5 is $360 pushes up to 600gph suggest with media
Eheim pro3 2075 330 gph $233.99
Rena xp3 $157 pushes up to 350gph

wattage might fall into effect (if you have to pay electric bill)

eheim pro uses 16 watts to
rena is 19
fluval is 48

most people who own all 3 of these filters love them so just pick the one you want and/or afford.

eheim and rena have bigger filters to match the fx5 but it would be overkill
if you did want a fluval filter for your tank the fx5 is the one you need the 405 only suggest use up to 100g tanks.

hopes this helps

Rena xp3 it is! thank you so much dude.
those wattage numbers really help too my mom is freaking about how much the bills gonna go up haha

You may have to consider the eheim 2260 or 2262. But i say go with a fx5

glad i could help... those fx5 people like but the wattage and weak gph for that wattage... theirs an eheim(twice the price of fx5) that pumps way more gph and uses half the wattage... the rena xp3 is great on my 75 and one guy runs 2 on his 150 and its great so far.. now that i have the money though i want to experience eheim.... now im not saying fluval is garbage but for the money that fx5 is by far not worth it.. if you want to save more money for the eheim you could run that 404 for a bit depending on stock.. i know a guy who ran a 404 on a 150 till he decided to sell the tank... no problems... he had a ton of fish too...

i have a eheim post going right now trying to see which one people think i should get.... lots of options and some are $$$

any questions when you set up your xp3 just pm me.. the instructions are straight forward it's not rocket science.. the tubes are clear so if your near a window, i put electrical tape around my tubes to block the sunlight.. had an aqua-clear and it was ridiculous how much algae built up with flowing water even....

****if you really want to save money run that fluval404 and go buy an aqua clear 110(i think its a 110.. the biggest they make) that should be plenty of filtration for your tank! i ran mine for 3 years until i dropped it during cleaning..lol*****

If you want to control wattage and gph you need a SUMP, hands down best option for your situation. Can be made for cheaper than any filter your considering, very customizable and overall control over everything!
