So I finally got my 125!! Just have to wait for a paycheck to go buy my filters and sand to start this cycling process. But anyways after much thought I've decided to steer away from an oscar for now just so messy even though I do love them. So for now would something like this work in my tank? It is a 6 footer.
1 severum probably red spotted
1 electric blue acara
1 Angelfish
1 firemouth
15 tetras of some type
1 bristlenose pleco
4-5 pictus catfish
1 red tailed black shark

I agree. All my stupid red tail does is harass and pester the other fish. I'm hoping the acara I have with him gets big enough to smash him into the substrate. Also watch the pictus or you'll be doing surgery on some fish's mouth.

I think that would be fine. The firemouth is a central american fish and the odd ball out here. If it were my tank I would remove him and replace with a few more angels as they enjoy being in a group. Then I think you would be OK. Above comments are true, but I don't see any fish that would eat a pictus, maybe the severum but not too likely imo. RT Black sharks can be aggressive and nippy, but if you really like them, could give it a shot and remove if need be.

I have kept a red tail before he was sort of mellow mannered but I would gladly remove him if you all think its better off without him. I just enjoy the look of a male fire mouth how about some more pictus instead like the original list with 2 angels and 6 pictus cats? Or drop the firemouth and add a snakeskin gourami thoughts on this? And I'm thinking about going with serpae tetras, Congo tetras, odessa barbs or rainbowfish for the school.

I think ditching the firemouth for the gourami would be better since the FM would prefer higher pH harder water than your other fish. Which brings up the question, what is your water like?

If your pH is low, and the water is soft (assuming since pH is lower), your firemouth may not thrive, they prefer some hardness to the water and a bit higher pH. They also prefer to live in groups. I don't think it's a great fit with the rest of your fish tbh. If you really like the firemouth you would be better off doing a central american tank with a group of them. But none of your other fish would fit into that setup.
Those filters together should be OK as long as you keep up on maintenance. Personally I would probably get 2 of the larger canisters instead of can and HOB to keep the look consistent and for the extra room for media. But you could go either way.
