125 gallon with PBASS

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
PBASS in a 125 is just not an option plain and simple. For a growout sure they could live in there till about 12-14 inch and by then you could only have 2 or 3 bass with 3 really really pushing it as the bioload would exceed the water capacity to properly dilute nitrate.

Unless you have or going to setup a tank that's 8x2 then don't bother. In fact an 8x2 will only house an 18" bass.

Mokoa your tank is EXREMELY overstocked in my eyes. Before you go defensive remember this is a forum used to express advice to one another in a mature fashion. Your filtration is still not adequate even if you had 3 oscars in that tank. Well it doesn't matter actually matter how many GPH your tank pushes because whether it turns out 1800 gph or 500 gph the fact is no amount of filtration will help that tank.

If you can't afford a setup REQUIRED for Pbass then it is simple don't buy pbass. I have wanted PBASS forever and have the tank for them a 410 gallon, but fact is I won't buy a bass unless i know that tank is setup fully as i can't afford the rest off the equipment right now. So what am i doing... sticking to smaller CA cichlids that i know i can house.

Didn't I give my advice? If my conditions are not adequate then explain to me how I've had my fish in the same condition for over a year in a half? Like HULON said if lpenn31 wants to raise them in a 125g then sell them then thats great! I am not being defensive I just want lpenn31 to be able to enjoy these fish like I do!

Did I ask what your experience is? It's not rocket science to take care of fish. The guy was simply asking if 125g is okay and all I'm saying it is. Since my fish are living in a 100g tank it's wrong? They get fresh water every other day, they have great filtration, never had a single case of a disease, and they get fed every other day with varieties of different foods I am doing something wrong? Seems like my fish are doing more than fine here! Should I report myself to the authorities for "stunting" my fishes growth?[/QUOTE

Yeah, you think it's alright, but giving bad advice to a person on a forum where people come to learn about the hobby is not OK. You seem to be proud of the fact that your tank is overcrowded, and the fish are surviving. Just because they don't fall over dead, does not mean this is good fishkeeping. Fish don't have to be sick, diseased, or show any outward signs to be under stress, and there is science behind taking care of fish. A good bit of chemistry in fact. By the way, there are no laws for bad fishkeeping. You're safe. :D

These are the words of an obviously experienced fishkeeper. This says it all.

I can completely understand enjoying the cichla and being albe to share the common interest in them.

I guess I can't get over the fact people say "I will get a bigger tank later on" and the fish just stay in an unsuitable environment. I mean it would be like shoving my cat in a cage instead of giving him the comfort of my living room.

What definately doesn't make any sense to me is WHY on earth would someone buy a fish if they know they are going to sell it. Unless it is to make profit then yes I understand but personally I get attached to my fish and buy them for a reason as pets and I am not going to get rid of them just because i'm tired of looking at them and want something new. I took on the resposiblility to care for them and thats what I'm going to do.

Like I've been saying I never said 125 is "IDEAL" or "PERFECT" situation for Pbass but if he wants to have Pbass in a 125g he can. I'm not going to discourage the guy of getting Pbass because he has a smaller tank than most people on here. As a matter of fact I now do take more pride in my tank because according to people "it can't be done" when in fact it can.

Yep. Nothing else that really matters can be said. :D

this isnt intended for anyone so dont take it that way. You will notice on this site there is a ton of competition, of quote, who has the biggest tank. Alot of these guys eventually get out of the hobby. But in all honestly, like I said earlier, chances are you will not have your pbass when it gets to that point of worrying about a bigger tank. 9 out of 10 of us get rid of our fish, sell them etc. because we want newer stock. Its the same with the species, theres competition of who has the rarest too. Everything that was said on this topic about water etc., take it all in, because he's right. But like I said, chances are you wont have them at 16", they will have been long gone either because you sold them, they died or whatever the case may be. Just dont bicker with some of these guys and listening too you need 300 gallons right now, because you dont. Your 100 is fine for now.
Jesus I hate this forum sometimes......

I've always said in the past that I would get a bigger tank myself but because of my situation I'm not loaded with cash. I have had the best experience with my Pbass than any other fish that I have kept. There has been times where I had to debate on selling my fish because I need some extra cash but then thought I've enjoyed these fish so much that I couldn't bring myself to sell them. I don't know what lpenn31 situation is but if he can only afford to keep them in a 125g I say go ahead because you will get tons of enjoyment out of them.
