Would I be able to use a 5lb cylinder for c02? It would be cheaper long term, but I'm not sure if there is an adapter that would let me keep the flow as low as it would be if I used cartridges.

Would a 5lb cylinder use a larger tubing? If it does then what bubble counter should I use for it?

Should I use a c02 reader? If so which one?

(Better? Hendre Hendre )

Much better

As for co2 i am sure there are adapters and reducers. Ask at an LFS maybe

I'd strongly recommend against finnex etc with that plant list, any of them can be grown without co2, and in relatively low light :)

In regards to 3D backgrounds, they look good; but can take up an excessive amount of space, so i tend to avoid; but it's not a deal breaker.

Yeah just shrimp, though my gf wants endlers so maybe them instead in one tank, still cycling though so I have time to ponder :)

Am I right in guessing your tank is roughly 50 litres? Check out a light called the "dennerle scapers light", it's designed for a planted tank with somewhat similar dimensions to yours, failing that could check what power it uses, to find an equivalent :)

For co2, I always used sodastream cylinders, but yeah the bigger it is, just means you're changing it over less; hence less disruption to the plants. Disruption = algae

I'm no expert on the co2 rigging, but have a look at complete systems, to get an idea of how it's works; I.e. bubble counter, needle valve, regulator etc.

I use the UK website Co2 art

Currently just anubias, Java fern, qnd Monte Carlo. If the finnex could grow baby tears then I may get some of those.

In this small of a tank with co2 and a finnex I don't think you would have any issues growing baby tears as a carpet.

It's roughly 55 liters, so close enough.

I can't seem to find anyone who's selling that light, so a link would be appreciated.

I found a 60l sodastream cylinder for $30 (£22.6). Is the rating for how much soda it makes, or how much c02 it has?

I'm back... With questions! :D

So convict360 convict360 has gotten me hyped about doing a nano planted (hubby also likes the idea of trying it with a tiny tank before potentially wasting money on a larger setup) and I was going to use one of my tiny qt tanks for it but my mother in law had a tiny little tank under her house that she said I could have, only problem is it has no lid (isn't that why they made perspex? :P) otherwise it's a nice little tank, a few scratches but otherwise fine.. Now, for my never ending list of questions...

1. Can anyone suggest a nice substrate for planted tanks? I've read about the tropica substrate and am leaning towards that but if anyone has a better suggestion I'd love to here it!

2. Lighting, this is where I get confused, all the PAR and wpg and everything else is a little confusing.. Can anyone give me a link to an article that explains the idea of PAR in "simple" terms? I've read the bit in the planted section (and the various links within) but it feels like I need to be a scientist to understand it all, same with most of the info on plantedtank.net...

3. Co2, can anyone recommend a "cheap" kit that will run a 30ltr happily? I don't mind paying a bit for the actual kit, but would like something cheap to run. NO DIY! It looks so fiddly and confusing so I'm avoiding that road...

4. Is it possible to have a planted tank without fish? I honestly don't know what I could/would keep in a box that small so I'm leaning towards a fishless tank, is this at all possible?

Thanks in advance. :)

1- I am using flourite in a little container for my rooted plant in my betta tank covered in black beauty sand (one runner is growing well in just the sand)

2- I am using a normal clip on light with a 6500k colour temp. Other than that i have no clue on lighting

3- kit will be expensive, co2 wont be too much on a small tank if you dose right, i am not sure on brands though

4- 30litres is enough space for small fish and they add so much to the tank, look dwarf rasboras tetras etc. My rule is for most fish 6 times its lenth 2 times its width

I recommend a complete substrate, my favourite is Fluval shrimp stratum.

Lighting, depends on your plant list; what do you intend to grow?

You can rig up a fire extinguisher and regulator cheaply.

Entirely possible to do just plants :) just add ferts as required :)
