Yep hornwort and water hyacinths float. You can add the cattails too. And I don't think 4 ft depth is too deep for lilies. You better check on it though I am not too familiar with them.

All the best dude.
Some photos will help.

Place the Hyacinth near the most water flow. In a skippy filter or other open topped, bottom fill filter, Hyacinth work great as nutrient absorbsion. They also act as mechical because there roots are so fiborous they trap a lot of silt and debris. If left to float around the surface, which is another way to use them, they will provide shade and cover for fish.

Lillies can be used in 4' of water, but they will need to be planted into pots (look for Lotus pots) and placed on a platform of some sort. The closer to the surface the better. When the first leaves start emerging, the pots can be lowered into a little deeper water (6-12"). As they continue to grow and lengthen, they can be lowered into to deeper water (12"-24") until they can be placed on the bottom. You might not even place them all the on the bottom, at least not for the first year or two. Once the plants get into there 3rd season and have a big enough pot, they might be able to get placed on the bottom. Or you might find they do best in the 2-3' range and can be left permantly at that depth on a support. Try to get 50% or better coverage with lillies. They will shade the water for algae control, help regulate water temps, and again provide cover as well.

It is illegal in Cali. I don't know the penalties there but here in Tx it carries higher penalties than marijuana.

Not illegal. Illegal to ship to cali but not sell. Pond business and some LFS sell it here. I don't think they would sell it if it were illegal.

man and i thought it got easier wen it got to a pond =(
I live and breath the pond, anything wrong is a night sleep lost. I'm not even in the same league as Matt on the pond front, It's not heated but we love out mutts anyway, sleepless night a plenty.

If i did get a canopy for the pool or use the pool cover and i slowly killed the algae this way..wud it work with getting rid of the green color? Not looking to spend 2 grand on a uv

No. You're actually going to pollute it with dead matter. If you don't plan on an UV then living with the green. Nothing wrong with it just harder to see the fish.
