180g/700l half filled

I'm tempted to mix pool sand with my bigger sand, to densify (is that even a word?) it a bit. Don't know how it'll react over time, but I'm guessing addint substrate under sand will just make a mess when the time comes to have to trim the roots...

Very thin sand + less thin sand it probably will be!

Be careful with thin sand, it must be rinsed very well and even then you run a risk of it destroying your impellers.

Well, by thin sand I mean actual pool sand. I have a much less thin sand that will cover it (smaller should technically always be found beneath bigger, or so did science teach me :P), so I'm hoping it'll be fine, and would kind of recreate the muddy bed of mangroves.

Probably going to run my Eheim 600 Pro in that tank, even though the volume of water will be smaller than it previously was. So the intake will be a good 10 cm above sand level. Hopefully those conditions will suffice!

You still need to rinse it, but it sounds like you have it thought it already.

Of course, expecially if I use non-aquarium sand. I wouldn't want a cloudy tank and a broken filtration two days in... :/

Now I may have it all figured out, all I need to find out now is how much salt per litre... In grams/kilos, and in liters, since all I find are cups and gallons, which is a double conversion that's giving me nightmares!

Full salt is 3,3 - 3,6 % (weight).
3,3 - 3,6 kilograms per 100 liters.

That sets specific gravity up to 1,025 - 1,027.

Ergo: to add 1,001 to specific gravity, you need about 130 grams of salt per 100 liters..

To get 1.010 you need 1,3 kg per 100 liters.

Sooner or later you'll appreciate having a refractometer to monitor your levels with evap and water changes.

Refractometers are pretty cheap from what I saw. Do they exist in versions you leave in the water? With some fancy digital thingies and whatever? I like to check my parameters on the fly when I walk by. ;)

Thanks a lot for the conversions, by the way!

Up to automized state of the art, you just name your specs.

The fun part of brackish is that it's one of the only aquarium niches where it's not really that important to keep the parameters aviation quality steady all the time...

Pretty much all brackish life is used to huge changes in, say, TDS.

And yet, it seems so underused, undervalued, and left out of the hobby as a whole.
In fact, it seems harder because of how little information there is around... Hence all my questions!

I guess the limitation in the amount of different fish does play a role, same goes for plants, but I think I will love my Toxotes, especially since my girl is an amateur photographer, and will probably sit in front of it for days in hope to find a good shoot. :)
