1st stingrays!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
What i meant by find it wierd is that these looks like some black hybrids:) if they did send them as motoro x pearl you got a score with these rays:) im pretty sure both rod and kevin as solid as rocks to do business with as they are two known big names in this part of the hobby:)

So to say it with some simple words. Youve got some nice rays from them.

But please cover your heater as rays do get heaterburns really easy:)

Yeah. I'm pretty happy with the quality of the stingrays regardless of what they are. They look awesome and have a ton of personality. I'll make sure to cover the heater when I get home. These are my first rays and I'm still learning about how to care for them in order for them to thrive and not just survive. Any more tips would be much appreciated!

Keeo your water pristine. Try to keep nitrate under 10ppm all the time. And change alot of water. How big is the tank and whats the filtration for it?

I used a black pvc pipe and drilled a bunch of holes all over it, then zip tied it onto the heater. Less than 5$ spent. And took about 10 mins.

They are in a 75 with a gravity fed 20 gallon overhead sump filled with about 75% Matala pads and 25% Lava Rock. 500gph pump with a pre filter with fitler floss stuffed inside. I'll make sure to get a picture of it tomorrow. Very common set up in the Koi world. I didn't want to drill the tank or use canisters and I had a bunch of extra supplies laying around so I went for it. The water stays crystal clear. As of right now, all parameters are good to go. I do 50% water changes once a week. Should I increase this? Temperature is 81 degrees Fahrenheit. Their only tank mate is a 7" Platinum Jardini. I'm setting up a 400 wit a 125 as a sump right now and when they get of size, I will move them over.

Yeah I have a ton of PVC laying around so I'll definitely be able to do that. Thanks!

That sounds good. I would keep the temp around 28c. And if you have room for it add more biomedia. Feed them 3 times a day and change at least 50% twice a week. In my puptank i change 80% two to three times a week. And that tank is 540L with 120L sump. When you say your parameters are good to go. What does they read?

Wow. That’s a lot of water to change 2-3 times a week but maybe I need to step it up. By good to go I meant nitrates and nitrites reading 0, ph right at 6.8, and ammonia reading zero. However, I just took a reading right before typing this and it looks like my ammonia has risen to .25 ppm which is a concern. There’s some left over food that was hiding behind the pump before. Maybe that’s the culprit. I’m not sure. What do you advise?

And yeah I need more bio media. I’d like to eventually do a setup using k1 but for now I’ll just get some more lava rock or maybe those pot scrubber things

How long has the tank been up and running and did you use cycled media for your filter? If not that can kill the rays quite quick with either ammonia or nitritepoisoning.

Are you using an testkit like API or you using teststrips?

I change alot of water since im feeding heavy in all of my tanks.

Tank has been running for about 8 months with the same media. I'm also using an API Testkit.

Heard that Jardini is a pretty nasty tankmates since it's the most aggressive arowana.

Tell me about it. I used to have 3 growing out in a 125. 2 7" and 1 14". The 14" killed one of the small one and was on his way to killing the other one until I seperated them and put one in the 75g with the rays. They are all peaceful right now. I'll probably eventually end up rehoming the smaller Jardini if I can't get things to settle down. Awesome fish though. The name of my bigger one is Ares LOL
