2 fx5's for 250-300gal ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well I'll likely make my own stand or at least try if I buy a new tank so so can make stand any size I want :) prolly make the stand 36" tall....

If you cleaned a canister on a tank with an RTC, Pbass, 2 oscars, etc., you'd find that is completely filled with crud and dumping nitrates (or worse) into your tank. Out of site doesn't and still flowing doesn't mean that it's doing its job.

I'm a fan of removing as much nastiness (food bits, poop, etc.) from the water stream as possible with (easily changed / cleaned) mechanical filtration...and not mixing it with bio filtration. A pre-filter on a canister can help but will also cut down on flow (especially on a high flow one).

Matt

If canister is preferred, look into eheim 2262. Three times the volume of fx5...and I open it once a year

That's kinda not the point though. You could take dumps in your tank, add more pothos and your tank would still be ~20 ppm of Nitrate.

Just because crud collects inside a filter (and is out of site) doesn't mean that running your water through a crud filled cylinder makes sense.

Why not just clean the filter more frequently...and remove the thing that's driving nitrate production?

Most of my tanks have (air-driven) box filters. I try to change the fluff every week or two (it takes about 30 seconds)...

Matt

I could also change more water...but as it is, 20 ppm is good enough for me

Hey if i were you id put the 2 fx5s on there and add a 40 gallon sump. I ran a 350 with 2 fx5s. It did the job but you have to clean those things every few days the bio load is just way to high. I had about the same stock as what your going with. My RTC was 3 foot had, 2 oscars, 2 pacu, 2 dempseys, a jag, large pleco, Arowana, some earth eaters, and small colony of convicts as feeders. Every time i cleaned those filters there was actual mud in them.

Oh and i was changing out 200+ gallons every week.

ya basically all i want for stock is, my 2 oscars (7"/10") 1 ocellaris pbass (he only 2" in my grow 75g atm) will add a orino when im able to find one, and one silver arowana, and a RTC IF i can find one having touble finding bass and rtc here, so stocking wont be very much just large fish

and i was thinking prolly a 50-60gal sump under the big tank, and maybe keeping just one fx5 on the tank for polish the water for clarity

honestly I think 2 ac110's and 3-4 big sponge filters stacked on poweheads would be BETTER THAN 2 fx5.s and.... way cheaper...:)
