While I am generally against tanks smaller than 10g, my longest lived and healhtiest seeming betta lived in only 1.5g. When I was young I raised feeder guppies in a half gallon bowl that they were constantly breeding in. Daily or twice daily waterchanges probably helped, those guys didn't even have a filter! I don't have time for that anymore (well, don't think about it) which is why the tank has just plants in it, they seem happy.
