20 gallon stocking (for a 9 year old)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
When I was young and had a 20g I had a community. My favorite fish was my RTBS. Albino cories were also great, and I had some gouramis and neons were always a plus with me. Glass catfish and other weird odds and ends were fun for me to keep as well. They never lived long becuase I only cleaned the tank/changed the water when everything was green..

my first reaction would be go simple......and get varities that wouldnt take much care, remember his age!....its the ~puppy syndrome~....a kid wants one till they figure out just how much care and time it takes!...

i would go with tetras and community fish....a school of cardinals, few odd cats, rummy nose, glow lites, cobra guppies .....something with flash and color...but not a lot of aggression and care....rams are great if ya want something in the cichlid fam....and they have a lot of variations and cool behaviors....and toss in tons of easy to care for plants and voila!

I can't imagine a kid not being entertained by the eating habits of a dwarf puffer.

At 9 years old and restruicted to 20g I would go with varied, hardy and preferably colorful fish.
A pair of dwarf gouramis (Colisa lalia), a half dozen pearl danios, the same in redlined rasboras and harlequin rasboras, 3-4 oticinclus catfish, and a couple coolie loaches will stock the tank nicely with a good variety of shapes and behaviors. As a planted tank it will always be active and eyecatching, as well as easy on the budget and fairly hardy.

Wow thanks everyone for all the replies!!!

Dwarf cichlids, peacock gudgeons, dwarf pike cichlids, Butis Butis, or some small puffers would be good as a centerpiece. I have a feeling you'd have to help him out with the cichlids though.

What are some breed sof Dwarf pike and not too sure if they can be found around here. Ill have to let him look at the puffers. Dwarf Puffers right

Depends. Do you have any puffer experience?

I have some I have learnt alot from my uncle who had a 15 gallon with some in it (dwarf puffers)

Glofish. Kids love 'em.

He wanted some at first and we went to check some out and after he saw the ones at the pet store he did not want them anymore for some reason

He is over at a friends house so I will ask when he gets home how many can go in a 20g but he wants some neon tetra's and some other tank mates too

Just want to add one more thing he likes the puffers so far he has

3 dwarf puffers
4-6 neon tetras
1 snail (large) (puffers to control babies)

what else???

cardinals? are a bit prettier than neons, neons are half striped with color, the body of a cardinal is full colored but same colors....usually they carry both so compare!...and they always look good in a group/school...non agressive too...watch out for mixing non agressives with agressives...barbs generally can be pretty nippy...as gourami as well...ya might be resupplying the tank often! lol
