220g filtration plumbing?

The pump is external, so I'll have to drill my sump (oh fun, drilling glass for the first time ).

As far as filter socks, I was already thinking of splitting the drain into the sump from 2 pipes to 4 pipes, so I would actually be using 4 socks instead of 2. But I don't know yet. I may go with filter floss and poret sponges instead.

Let me know what size diamond hole saw you need cause I might allready have one you can borrow.

The only tip i can give for drilling glass is to use a drill that has a clutch and set it very low. I have drilled a few successfully and also shattered the entire back pane on my 125g.:irked::confused::( <--exactly what I felt like.

The reason i shattered it was because I got big headed and used a corded drill with no clutch. And about 90% of the way thru it grabbed and pushed the drill over sideways and caboom a crack went all the way across the pane.:screwy:I deserved that one. LOL

Cool, I believe the inlet for the pump is 2". Not sure what size hole that makes for the bulkhead yet. I'll have to check.

I only have a corded drill at home, but I think we've got a battery pwoered one here that I can adjust the clutch on. I'll have to check...

Actually, going with glass-holes.com, I can get a 2" bulkhead that needs a 3" hole. Their hole saws aren't too bad, so I might just buy one, if you don't have one laying around.

Does anyone know the actual flow rate of a 100 micron polypropylene and 100 micron polyester filter socks? I'm seeing 25gpm to 50gpm depending on what website I check. If so, that's 1,500-3,000gph per sock... so I shouldn't have any issues using them, especially if I split the two drain lines into 4 outputs emptying into 4 socks...

BTW.... your pump will have 1.5" inputs and outputs. So you will need a different size glass drill to put the bulkhead in for the pump.

1.5" for both inlet and outlet? That will make it easier, I guess (rather than 2" inlet and 1.5" outlet).

So i guess I'll need 2x 2" bulkheads for the drains, 1x 1.5" bulkhead for the sump outlet, and 2x 1" bulkheads for the return lines... That's a lot of bulkheads and drilling holes!

Wow, just priced out the bulkheads and hole saw I'll need at glass-holes.com, and it came out to about $62.25 for 6 bulkheads and a glass hole saw. Ouch!

Will there be any issues with going from the 1.5" outlet from the pump to 2x 1" pipes for the returns? Should I do 2x 1" returns, or 1x 1.5" return?

Two 1" return lines will be fine. It will keep the tank from being a tide pool. with all the flow rushing out in one spot.

That sounds about right on the bulkhead fittings.

Yeah, I'm thinking dual 1" returns, one at ~6" depth and one at ~18" depth, each splitting into 2 of those 3/4" lock-line fittings to point the water towards the front and back of the tank at each level of flow. How does that sound? Or should I just leave the 1" openings from the bulkhead to point straight down the tank?
