220g filtration plumbing?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'd really prefer to have a series of sponges to filter the water first, then run it through the filter socks, but I have yet to figure out a simply way of setting up a sump to do this (without adding a second container set on a higher level than the sump).

Interesting ideas here, anything new with this set up?

The sump was set up with 4 filter socks as the main mechanical filtration, then the water flows over a drip plate and falls through a whole bunch of pot scrubbies, then goes to the pump to return back to the tank.

This tank hasn't been set up yet, although the sump is done. We are in the middle of trying to sell our house, so this tank is in storage until we move.

Seeing the design stages of a sump makes me want to build another set up :naughty: .

I have been using filter socks for almost a year now and they do an amazing job as long as they're maintained as you stated.

I have to agree that your sponge design after your micron socks looks very promising.

Although I still do not understand why you are adding a drip plate for your sponges.

Wouldn't it be easier to just add ceramic rings for bio media submerged ---> return pump?

This way you do not have to clean your drip plate or make one EVER.

I would also plumb in your sump somewhere a overflow so you can add a drip system one day. Might as well add that overflow now even if you are not running a drip system.

The sponges work very well as biomedia, and are much cheaper than ceramic rings. I use a drip plate as this is more of a wet/dry than a sump. 1/3-1/2 of the sponges should remain above the water level in the sump. The drip plate then allows water to drip through the sponges, creating a very wet, yet still oxygen rich environment.

I do plan to run a drip system eventually, but I can always drill the sump later. Besides, I haven't set this system up yet. I may go ahead and drill it when I do set it up, because it won't get set up until we're in a new house. I plan on doing a drip system at the new house (if we ever get it).

I hope you are able to continue work on it soon! My big tanks sat for awhile because of an impending move. Now that I have a place for it, I'm getting back into it. I plan on using some of your ideas for my DIY sump.

Yeah, me too. We're working every day to finish up projects at our current house so that we can list it for sale. Once we get it sold (or at least an offer on it) we'll probably make an offer on another house. We have a couple in mind, but who knows if they'll still be there when we're ready to offer.

Once we're moved, hopefully I will be able to devote some time to get it up and running early on. My fish need the extra space!
