What kind of paint did you try? Krylon fusion might work, if that's not what you already tried.

But I think painting the foam insulation, and somehow making it removable will be your easiest option for background/insulation.

Looking good so far.
You could paint the styrofoam insulation for your background. Make it easily removable for servicing. Cover all the tank in the garage with insulation to minimize the heat loss.
What are the dimensions of your tank?

the tank is 72" L x 30" H x 24" D

the paint i tried was just cheap spray paint i had laying around. and yea i will insulate this well . the garage is kinda heated , and i will be stocking with north american natives (really want a grass pickerel ) so they can tolerate the cooler temps . also gonna run 3 300w heaters in the sump

i am doing the final clean on the tank this evening . and , depending on how that goes , myaybe adding the substrate . and get start plumbing the sump and canister filter. i hope to get this going by the weekend . the wife is anxious for me to get it done as the 125 is sold (same price i paid for the 220) and it is going to my stepsons house.....as soon as i make some visible progress i will post more pics

If you're going to be doing a native tank, I definitely wouldn't worry too much about temps. What's the ambient temp in the garage? As long as its about 65F they ought to be fine. But with a couple heaters in the sump, you ought to keep it in the high 60's to low 70's easy enough.

I would paint it anyway. It shouldn't scratch too easily.

the reason for not painting is i will need to see through the back glass during cleaning , as there will be no access from the front ....

ok . got the tank clean last night . so on to getting the plumbing and lighting set up

i was at wal-mart the other day and say some CFL bulbs that were 26w and 6500K , this got me thinking why not build an inexpensive light kit using these instead of a store bought kit ? I am a service tech for an eletronics company so wiring and such will be a breeze .

my idea is to build a small wooden enclosure with 10-12 of these bulbs . i am still trying to figure out what to use as a reflector . maybe a piece of roof flashing . any ideas ?

i was at home depot this afternoon and found some light sockets on clearence for $.59 each so i bought 10 of them gonna try to get them wired up tomorrow (i want to call in work tommorrow so i can get this done !! ) i wish i had more time to work on this

I built a wooden canopy for my 125g tank that used roof flashing and 8 cfl twist tube sockets. It provided plenty of light. They grew plants so well that the fish barely had room to swim around, and I had to trim the plants weekly or they were growing out of the top of the water and actually burning themselves on the bulbs...
