Arowana do this motion with their mouth ...also sometimes curl their body inward as if practicing to attack something...perfectly normal behavior... and my advice would be to not to offer the frozen mouse etc and other strange foods that he would not eat..stick with the pellets.. are they the same brand the previous owner gave him..? and also try shrimp and frozen silversides but beyond trying here and there ...give him time.. they can easily go a month with out eating.. he needs time to settle in.. and make sure u weigh down the top ..they are jumpers ..

I agree... my arowana (silver) does this all the time- the "mouth motion" and the "curling attack motion"... he enjoys going out at the powerheads and fighting the "current":... i think that as long as the fish is active there isnt much to worry about... i didnt face a feeding problem with him when i got him but it ocurred with my oscar... i would assume it is a question of how much time he will take to get comfy and adjust to the new environment... though i wouldnt know about whether the tank should be cycled more and/ or issues regarding the oxygen levels

Out of the 5 Arowanas that I have had, they all did the "head whip-gag" thing. They were in a 180 gallon one time or another with semi strong current. Maybe that had something to do with it?

This coughing/gaging action may be normal or could be sign of something wrong. Very rarely have I seen this from any of my three larger ones. A few years back I was treating my aro for ich. While incorrectly adding salt to the tank, my silver decided to take a mouthful, the resulting flurry of action was filled with the behavior as has been described. My guess is your aro's gills have been irritated by the constant unsafe levels of ammonia and nitrite, this could be the reason for the behavior.

You need to fix the problem you can control, having proper water params will likely result in your aro behaving normal.

i did not know he said coughing... my guy does not cough... he just acts like he is going to attack something... and this is just because it must be freakin boring being a predator and theres nothing to hunt... so he acts out and pretends..either by seeing something in the glass...his own reflection etc...this is definitly nothing of an issue with water etc.. he has and always will be doing this from time to time..as my other arows have done too... maybe they don't do it if they have alot of other tank mates... but mine are alone so that may be the reason why he does it.

It took 14 days for my Blk Aro to eat when I got him. And he still is very shy about eating. It just takes time,

The term coughing was added by me, the OP said gaging. Like I said I've rarely seen my silvers or larger black do this, with the exception of the salt incident.

the tank has been running for awhile. i did have ick and treated the tank but that was before i got the aro. about 2 weeks after i got the aro. i use a fluval fx5 and a sea claer 3' wet dry filter with a quiet one 4000 pump. all my fish are very active and so is the aro. i got the aro and two gars together. the gars are eating just not the aro. im doing a water change tomorrow so im hopinh my levels get better. my tank should be cycled by now. someone told me because i used ick remover it recycled my tank.
