Well the person or persons that live under him may not like 2500 pounds falling on them while they sleep neither would their faimly if death was involved.

Most insurance wont pay if the fish tank breaks, I called my company and 3 others trying to get a policy that would protect me in the event of a tank failure. none of them could offer me anything.

LOL

I am not an egineer, but I have a feeling that the article was probably written on the conservative side..

however, with tanks over 125 gallons I think careful consideration needs to be paid to avoid damaging flooring

you will often hear people say 'oh, its only (some small number) of pounds per square inch, its fine...

problem is, that most of the time the person is looking at tank as if the weight is spread out over the ENTIRE bottom panel, which it isn't - 99.9% of stands have perimeter support only.

which means that the full weight is taken around perimeter of the stand only..

another thing that the article mentions was the rating for floor strength is as if the whole floor was taking the weight..

with a giant aquarium, we are loading up a small portion of the floor with the enormous weight...not spreading that weight out over the entire floor...

now, has an aquarium ever crashed through the floor? probably not in North America at least.

but can an aquarium as large as 265 gallons do some serious damage to the structural integrity of a floor if it is not beefed up/supported properly?

I would think so.
