28-30" fire eel beat up my 20" tigrinus!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That's pretty crazy! They have a HUGE fire eel at my lfs and he is a big puppy dog.
That's part of the cool thing about fish, they have personalities, big fish especially.
Great pics! Hope he gets better and the eel chills out!

They are some serious battle wounds! You say every 6 months? Wonder if it has something to do with mating or the air pressure possibly.... hmmmm i agree with all on the fact that u have one very tough fire eel! Savage that is!

Never crossed my mind fire eels would be capable of this degree of aggression. They look passive when I spotted a few in a nearby store and even had one attempt to eat foods on my hand.

That is scary. I have an 8" Fire Eel in with Frontosa tank. He has been in there for a few weeks without incident. I got him a few months ago as part of a CL purchase. He had been in my peacock tank, but kept himself buried in the substrate.

The Tig has completely healed up already. The fire eel is in my other tank that has nothing but rays.. He has never shown behavior with rays.

He does eat out of my hand every feeding.. He has since he was about 9". It is the only way i could get food for him back in my cichlid days.

I will try to updated some pictures of them soon.

Glad the Tig is doing well.. my Fire eels can be down-right jerks when they feel like it. I def compare mines intelligence, and aggression to that of some of the more aggresive african cichlid species I've kept in the past.

My huge fire eel will pound any whiskery type of catfish. He won't stop until he has killed the fish. For a fish with a funny innocent mouth they sure have power.

Is this a trend then? I was thinking of getting a Fire Eel and a whiskery type catfish

I may rethink this if more people post something like this

any pictures of that eel OP?

I think this is how it is for a lot of people. I on the other hand have never seen an ounce of aggression from my 28-30" eels. Not sure why, but they're totally chill in comparison to others of the same size. I'm not sure I'd count on having a similar experience, though. It maybe that they just haven't shown me all they got yet.

it happens with mine every so often, i wonder if it is in the summer when the temperature in my tank warms slightly.

i will dig up a picture of the eel
