3 Convicts

So since there is no male in the tank the eggs are unfertilized?

Yeah they won't be fertilized. I'd throw in a male.

The eggs are very hard to see since they laid them on the opposite side of the wood. I have a large piece of plexi that I could have cut to fit the tank and serve as a divider. DSCN8518.jpg

Im not sure. eggs get removed by the parents when they are unfertilized, so wait and see. You have either 2 homosexual convict, or a transexual female convict  I would say leave all of them there. Btw you are very lucky! My convict male and female are together for a month and a half and no breeding. :swear::swear:

Awwww....so they laid useless eggs and they are waiting for a male to fertilize them....
You really recommend adding a male after everyone said adding a male would create aggression issues. I was only excited about the clutch because I thought she may have had them fertilized before she entered tank but if males fertilize after eggs are laid....they are inert...lol
I'm just going to let her protect her inert eggs. Soon, I'll get the drift wood and reorganize the tank and hopefully they won't pick on the little guy so much.
Awww...I was excited for like an hour

Whats your tank set up? Mine starting breeding the second day I put a female in.

Aggression will go up but your tiger barbs will not be overly picked on and the other two convicts will get chased but shouldn't get seriously injured. You can buy a male but remember once they start breeding they don't stop. You could wind up with 500 Convicts in a few months and nowhere to sell them. I sell my convict fry and feed what I can't sell to my oscar.

Yeah, I feel bad. Hopefully one of the fish is male but looks female due to inbreeding or a freak radioactive accident. That would make things more happy. Then they can have mutant fry!

looks like babies to me

eggs, yes. babies, no.

alot of female cichlids will drop eggs regardless of a male being present.

adding a male at this point doesnt mean he will show up and fertilize the eggs, that would probably be very unlikely as cichlids pair up before the female drops a clutch of eggs.

If you do get a male, he will likely pair up with one of the two larger females. Convicts are easy to breed. I would recommend finding a male that is around the same size as the two larger females. You may also consider taking the smallest one back to the LFS, it may get roughed up once you have a pair.

congrats on having eggs, this is usually a good indicator that your water parameters are pretty good.

LOL!

Please do not breed your mutant strain of cross-dressing convicts into the hobby, Blood Parrots are bad enough :WHOA:

Just kidding, my wife and daughter think blood parrots are cute, I just happen to think they look like mutant gold-fish. I am not trying to de-rail :P
