3 newly bought dovii's Male or Female?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
They are very nice looking. Is there any spotting on body or fins? Cause I'm not seeing any. Its possible there could be a male but from Just looking at these pics I'm still going with female bud.

Thanks man. im very excited to raise these guys. The little guy in the first couple pics has some spotting showing and his fins are turning a blueish color, just couldnt see them really in these pics because i disturbed them while they were sleeping. He is also the smallest one of the three and showing color first, ...im hoping one turns out male. I might have to grab a couple more if not lol. where im from you never see dovii's. ive been looking out for them the last 6 years and i finally found someone that had about 30 of them. i would have a problem finding someone to grab a couple off me.

It can still a little tricky at 2 in. In the seconded set of pics the first looks to have some signs of patterns and color around the mouth and gill plates. In some of the other I see no signs of color or spotting. I have not seen spotting on my males at that size though. Also my females have not shown any color around the mouths at that small of a size. I think you have at least one male.....give it another 1.5" or a months time and I think guys on hear could give a definite answer. Also my males with spotting loss any signs when young and they get stressed. It will start showing at 3" or so but then they could show no signs when you walk up to the tank.....so these pics could be a little deceptive at this size.

Hmm.. I agree with most of this. I have had thousands of dovii and I can sex majority of my males as small as 1.5-2". And there will spotting. And yes the spots will become more prominent at larger sizes. But females will also have color in face and some on fins. There may be a couple of males. But in those pics I don't see any spotting at all which indicates female to me. Maybe try posting more pics so we can get a better idea. What size are they now

And I'm not saying that Watson is wrong at all this is just my experience.

Yea not saying one of us is right or wrong....sounds like were saying the same thing really. I know it's a lot easier to tell in person and when you get to watch them grow. Just wanted to make sure things weren't taken the wrong way.:)

No. Your right. It can be tricky to tell in pics. And would be a lot easier if we were looking directly into the tank. But to the untrained eye it'd frustrating:) and 3" is a good size to get a more accurate sexing.

Thanks guys

I will for sure put up some more pics in amonth or so. for what i seen i do catch some coloring but like you all said it doesnt show when you come close to the tank. They get very scared and are some what stressed out at the moment...soon enought that will all dissapear. Ill be back in a months time to post more. Thanks again guys for all your help.

Couple updated pics...im almost positive one of these 4 are a male...possibly 2 are. I have a totally of 4 at around 2 to 3 inches in length...They are awesome
