30,000 gal pond algae problem

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
UV is Ok is Austrialia and S. Fla, but what about northern IL and Wisconsin. Hard plumbing a UV unit in area that can have 4 feet of frost in the ground doesn't seem like a good idea.

If you've got "4 feet of frost in the ground" (does that mean how far down the frost line is?), unless a heated pond there's not going to be any algae or plants anyway .

You drain the filter systems in freezing weather.

We once used daphnia to remove algae from the water of a pool converted to a pond a good friend had. Depending on how fast the fish in that pond will eat the daphnia and the speed at which they will breed, that might be an option. The water cleared up very quickly.

Algae continues to grow throughout the year. Just like bene. bacteria, there are different types of cool/cold water plants and algae. Some lakes rely on the algae and little plant growth to produce, although it is small, O2 for the inhabitants. As long as the ice is not covered by snow, plants and algae will produce oxygen through the ice.

water hyacith! it shades the water from the sun = less light = less algae, plus it grows quickly using up nutrients, less light will keep it cooler. and its cheap. they double in number about every 2 weeks so you wont need but 10 or so to start off with.

ok i'm back,
here's what's going on...
saturday the ice started to melt. so i was helping it by taking chunk of ice out. guess what? the water is green:WHOA:. the pond has had ice and snow on it since november(over 4 months) and it's green:cry:.

someone mentioned snails... there are 1000's of tiny snails in there...

i'm trying to find pictures(or i'll just take more) of how i have the water circulating so maybe someone can fix what i'm doing wrong...:irked:

btw... pondmarket.com sells(when they get them in) uv's that will fit into my savio skimmer. so they souldn't be an eye sore... i'll get them as soon as possible.

thanx, all, for your concern and ideas. i'm sure with your help i'll beat this problem...:grinno:

here is a pretty good shot of how my water circulation goes...
first off. (this is before i knew the size of my pond{i thought it was around 10000gals}) the pump i have, was a replacement(warranty) of a malfunction pump. they are supposed to be about 4000gph. the 1st one was powerful but slowed after time. 2nd one was modified of the 1st one but really sucked from the get go...

water enters left or the cattails into a savio filter/skimmer, pumps up to the far right as you see in the video. there it runs about 14' (about 2'wide) turns 90deg. about 6' then another 90deg.to the top of water fall. then falls 8' down threw a few level to the pond...

there is 1b stone up in the top(that i think are to small{i 1st filled it with the stone and the water did not flow thew it fast enough}). the plants started from a couple of plants i got from the lake(they grow extremely fast).

Thats not so bad.....well,. Ok, it's kinda bad, but totally fixable!

There is another YouTube video where that PondMart guy has a pond just as green as this one, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Adv2L7GACnQ and that guy just added a UV light to his filter and it started to clear the green away fast.

I have learned to trust Dr.Joe's point of view, and would just add that I have seen videos where a good UV light filter has really helped ponds that were a lot more green that this one is...

as for the money of a good UV light?...yes, thats nasty bite out of a paycheck to be sure.
But face the facts, while a green pond might not actually harm the fish, it sorta makes the pond a bit pointless to visit from a people point of view.

You took your time to make the pond, and it's a GREAT pond,,,except for the green water.
you owe it to yourself to get the pond in viewable shape too...

The plants are growing fast because of extra nutrients, and that is a good thing. The pond is still young and needs to balance itself out. Get more cirulation in the pond. The beneficial bacteria and organisms that break down the "muck" in the bottom of the pond needs oxygen. Yes there is muck, every pond has it in the spring reguardless of the fall clean-up. As those organisms eat the muck, they release co2 adding to the problem because they create more co2 and it lessens the avail. o2 in the water. I will post pics. of my pond when the sun comes out. I run my falls year round and have a lot of o2 in the water. The ice has been gone for a month or so and I need to do a clean up. Don't worry, it just takes a little tweaking and you will have clear water. Wheather it is a UV for a couple of months until the plants can handle the load, you will figure it out and we can help.

I think i have just come up with a new business plan....

Renting fish equipment.
