300ish Gallon plywood - First attempt

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Your more then welcome. I don't think I'll have any tanks here. But hopefully will be looking to buy a house sometime next year then it's on like you wouldn't believe.

Congrats on finishing your gorgeous tank finally! It looks really nicely built!

Americans are so lucky.. Everything is so cheap in your country. The 4 sheets of plywood alone, would cost as much as your entire build combined in my country :/

Wow, read this whole thread, epic build and very inspirational! I don't think I could come close to the craftsmanship so I'll continue to just buy my tanks :(

I used to live in Italy for a while so I understand your plight. Although I'm sure if you searched around there might be some good local sources of some sort of alternative. I found a lot of things in Europe that would have been very useful that have never been seen in the USA.

What thickness is the wood used to make the tank? I have seen you mention it is Birch 7 layer but not the actual thickness, would that be 1/2" or 3/4"? Very nice build by the way.

Really? Sorry for the oversight. It's 3/4"

sorry I just read back several pages and see the glass thickness. How did you determine that size was strong enough?

Just Google aquarium thickness calculator. There should be several in a sticky in the DIY section. I think the safety factor is 2.3 or higher? Been a while.

The paint held up wonderfully actually. The tank is disassembled now as I have moved twice but it was filled for nearly a year and have used it for a few other smaller things. Only issue I had was when I made my first set of lids there was almost no ventilation in the airspace in the tank and it grew some mold. Adjusted the lids to give a tad bit more airflow and the mold went away.

Your lucky I just got back on MFK after like 2 years actually. lol

Woo. Just got back on here. Talk about a trip down memory lane.
