330 gallon setup and sump build

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It sounds kinda like your set up is a little touchy in the water lvl dept but I wouldn't think it would. Pothos is pretty cool plant. My wife was slowly torturing one in the living room it had a couple leaves left alive, a lot of the vines were shriveled it was mostly dead. I cut the good ( not shriveled) parts of the vine off stuck them in an overhead sump I set up on the 75 and they started sprouting leaves again and growing roots! I wouldn't call it a beast yet but its growing great. Obviously I didn't see a lot of nitrate reduction in the beginning but now that its established its sucking them up! I'm sure a plant that is doing well at the start will probably give you a better result quicker.
Ive always been told that any real uv is better then none I don't know if petsmart uv counts as real or not. I had a big aqua uv on my salt system going into the clown racks I had set up, it was all plumbed together with the main system and I thought that the babies could benefit from the added protection. ?? all I know is it didn't hurt and I had cheep florescent lights on the racks and no algae on the glass .

sounds like I am going to have to start looking for some pothos then. I am think about adding a UV now and will just mount to the underside of my stand. Looks like I need a powerhead for it? I just did a quick google on them

Yeah something to give flow. I want to say I fed mine off what ever pump was feeding the breeding racks I just "t'd" off the supply line and put a ball valve to get what I thought was close to the correct flow rates. The uv I got was over kill for the 100 ish gallons on the breeding rack, but undersized for the whole system. I figured since it was all tied together sooner or later all the water in the system would pass through it.

gunna have to take a look in to it. Now to figure out where to put everything in my sump will be the question lol

Just catching myself up on this build... looks great! Will be cool to see it when those firemouth's start putting on some size.

Thank you! Currently having an issue with the tank. I think I'm going through a mini cycle or the tank was not fully cycled from the seachem stability. I'm down from 10 firemouth to 4 at this point. One tetra has been swimming in circles for the last 3 days.

Trying to ride it out. I've done two 50-75% water changes this week alone to try and combat any problems I am having. Water parameters are the same in the tank that are coming out of my tap. Hopefully thee four little guys hold on. Been pretty upsetting to have everything be fine and then all of the sudden dropping like flies

Wow, that's a big attrition with such a big tank/dilution factor. Over feeding? Definitely no more fish for a bit, let things settle down. Sorry to hear things aren't going well :(

Oh! Have you tested your water? What are parameters? That's not good really shouldn't see much of a rise or fall of nitrites or ammonia using stability. Did you continue dosing 7 days after adding meeki?

no more fish for a while. Want to get everything under control before I even think about adding anybody else. I feed once a day and only enough that it all gets eaten. Try to do small pinches at a time to make sure there is no left over waste. I am waiting on parts to redo both of my returns and create spray bars almost with three 3" locline nozzles on it. The eductors I have on the tank do not allow me to achieve the proper gph turnover since it's like shooting a laser beam out of them and not spread out. It either blows the fish to one side of the tank or sends sand everywhere. With the nozzles I hope to be able to disperse the pressure over the three sets of nozzles compared to the one

i keep testing the water and come up with the same results unfortunately. Both tap and tank water read
PH 7.8
Ammonia .25
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 10ppm

I did continue for 7 days and a little extra but I am wondering if I didn't have enough of a bioload maybe. It's a mystery to me right now. Sad to watch the fish struggle and not be able to do anything about it

Take a pic of your bio media....maybe there isnt enough.

Also post a pic of the ammonia test but test it with no prime in the system if possible.
