35 gal possibility

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
How about a Salvini + some dithers and maybe a bushy nose? Or I kinda like the idea of a having a group of about 4 or 5 electric blue rams + a bushy nose + maybe tetras or platys. Or if that still doesnt fit then maybe a pair or two of angelfish. Or a pair of angelfish + rams maybe? A lot of research is going into this lol

My rule of thumb is a minimum of10 gallons per 1 inch for a species of adult cichlid (in reality any fish), so to me a 35 gal tank is only large enough for a 3.5" cichlid at adulthood (or a pair or trio, not 10 gallons per individual). My rule is based more on what territorial requirements a fish may need.
To clarify, I believe a 50 gal tank is only big enough for a couple 5" cichlids, or for me, a 24" dovii would require a "minimum" 240gal tank, etc etc.
Back to your problem, I believe
Cryptoheros nanoluteus is one would fit that concept in a 35 gal.

Alright, thanks guys. Wont plan on getting a sev then. Am I only restricted to rams and other small fish? Cant I get a fish that would grow to about 6" and is colorful and peaceful? I really like the centerpiece fish + dither fish combo. Or is my tank just too small?

A 5-7" cichlid would do fine in a 35. Dwarf acaras, a single festivum, and several others (for some reason I am drawing a blank right now, but I know there are many other species around that 6" mark). A school of 6-8 small (2-3") but deep bodied tetras would be great. And then a small species of pleco and call that tank done. :)

If you are wanting to avoid aggression, avoid the salvini. They get to be pretty mean for most of the species. A group of 4 rams could live comfortably in the 35 (keep an eye on potential pairs becoming territorial). Avoid angelfish in numbers less than 4. Their social hierarchy in small groups of 2 or 3 can lead to them picking each other to death.

Thats my idea of a great tank! Could you suggest anything that is peaceful and is colorful? I really like those pearly fish and those really red or orange ones. Or if not, can I keep a group of about 4 blood parrots + rosy barbs and a bushy nose or maybe some corys?
