how big of pumps do i need?

you need to have between 5 and 10 times turnover.

that means all the water needs to be circulated 5 to 10 times per hour.

so if your, excuse me, the tank is 3500 gallons... (times 10)

you need 35,000 gph...

I think you should read these threads atleast before you ask anymore questions its most of the info you want. I added one more since i personally would never do a water change on a tank that big.

This is outside so you don't have worry about much else and this can easilly be fed from the solar water heater previously mentioned on the roof of the house.

Once you understand what the filter is used for you'll know the answer..........so what is it that you don't understand?
(and 5x overflow is overkill with massive bio filtration IME)

We've been over this. Why don't you actually get a 500 gal tank, then you can discuss filtration for it?

in my opinion, i think the scrubbies w/d would work better for what im doing. the tank is 6' tall so if i use the bio-tower then it will be hard to get the water going to the tank and up the tube and over(unless there is an answer to that). and with the 400 to 500 gallon scrubbies w/d, the water falls down the tube to it then gets pushed up to the tank with the pump. so is there any thing i missed or is that it? and if thre is a fix for the bio-tower, what is it, and will it be better than the scrubbies w/d.

What about the 240 you got for $550 what do u use to filter that tank? Id assume a wet/dry since it would work best or are you using hang on and cannister filters

either would serve the same purpose. I'm not trying to step on your toes, but do you understand what a filter's job is?

i use 2 canister filters. but lets get back on track. by the way the largest pump i can find is 8000 gph, any 1 seen any bigger 1s, if so post a link.
