3fx5s on a 300??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
is that too much filtration. i have one just striaght down with no difuser so it doesnt add too much flow. and the other 2 facing into eachother so it doesnt make a whirlpool.
but is that too much flow?
and also what do yall think i should put in each one? i have been playing around with diff stuff and currently one is filled with carbon, the other 2 have filter pad in it and bio balls
i might order a few pounds of ceramic rings to add to one of them and im aslo getting a few bottles of purigen for the chemical one.
i also have pothos growing in the tank to help with nitrates. even tho they stay pretty low. under 5ppm range. but im adding a few more fish soon that might change. hopefully the additional fx5 will help counter act the fish

Personally, I would fill the canister filter with sponges and sand..............Yes, filter with sand.............As for bioballs ans cermaic rings, I would be more comfortable if they were in a wet dry filter.........

fx5s no likey sand lol i used some bio max cubes one time and the like pieces that came off actually jammed the filter and stopped it from working. i had to take it apart and clean it all out

Learned real quick to use media bags for bio media on an FX5. :D

OP, there's no issue running 3 FX5s if you already have them. I didn't know you already had them when I posted before.

ouch! what is that n there? did you have to trash it?
n yea i have them. but now im trading them for a sump to get som really crispy water :) it should be a pretty sweet setup.
pics as soon as i get the sump in. its being built right now.

That's eheim substrat pro. Just had to clean it out and it was good to go. Filter is still running to this day without a hitch a year later. :)

Did you trade all 3 for the sump? I would hold on to one for backup. What kind of pump are you going to use?

I'm glad that you are getting a filter that will make you happy. I personally love the FX5 (I own 4) and run 2 of them on my 125 and the other two on my custom 135. I think three would still be minimum for your 300 depending on the dimensions and stocking. The sump option allows you to add additional pumps and media, which may be your best bet. See if the guy who is building it for you will make dual outputs for it.

i currently have two f 5s but have not been able to test drive them yet. i have mine filled with ceremic rings in the bottom , carbon in the middle and pads in the top part.

thanks,
jc

Do it since you already have it. :) Fully utilize them!

There is no such thing as over-filtration.. the more the better! :headbang2

clockwork, he is working on it now. should be done this week. but im only trading 2 the other one went on my 93 cube growout for my pbass and bichirs. and the pump is goin to be a snapper so should have at least 2000 gph right now i only have about 1000 with the fx5s so that extra flow will help alot
andrew, i like the fx5s but they are just alot of work to maintain.

I think that any filters like this should be filled with the best thing for bacteria you can find, then some wool. People say that wool is bad because it slows the rate down and it gets clogged, but after a month I'll tell you the wool had more dirt than the filter sponges on my fx5, and the water goes through the wool AFTER its been through the sponges. the wool takes out much smaller particles and really cleans the water. just reading the last few posts you may have changed your mind about having fx5s.. my mum needs me so i havent got time to read, haha!
