4' 90 Gallon converted to 240 4' Square Plywood and Glass Build

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
A few little adjustments on the framing then I'll be able to glue to the bottoms on the 24" tanks then silicone the glass in place. I plan to mask the glass and overlap it with Pond Coat 3/4" for a solid seal. I'll double check the adjustments on Saturday then do all four tanks at once.

Bringing in the other two pieces of glass for the 19" tanks to clean them tomorrow night and hopefully get to fit test them.

Just a guess on size...im not sure how or if mounting glass would work but I figgure roughly a 24" glass piece and using 2x4's for the top and bottom and sides of the front glass area would yield a glass section 24" minus what ever kind of overlap you need to silicon it to the wood...and then the extra inches (3.5) come from the 2x4's. Still just a 72x24 viewing window but extra room from the 2x4's. Follow? Its not exact...I know there needs to be area to silicon...just saying you can use the wood you use to frame the glass to make the tank volume bigger.

You can't increase the height 3" and use the same glass, especially when you are at 24" already, at least not safely IMO/IME.

Tank volume increase needs to be from length and width not height. The hydrostatic paradox confirms that there is no increase in thrust when the surface area is increased.

Depth on the other hand exponentially increases thrust. It may not seem like a lot with just a 3 inch increase, but it is likely enough to compromise the safety factor.

when you plan on masking the glass.

Are you gonna use the same method as the corners?

Paint, lay the mesh, and paint again?

Hmmm...good point...I wasnt thinking about that part of it. I guess it would really depend on how thick the glass is to determine how tall it can be. Still 6' x 2' x 3' or 4' is a bad azz tank

hey pete, do you know if the pond coat stick well over glass?

and we need more pics!!!
