4' 90 Gallon converted to 240 4' Square Plywood and Glass Build

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Awesome...cant wait to see this one in person too! Makes me kick myself for not taking a free 210 that had a cracked back glass....could have used the front!

That L shape is trick!

You could also do a \_/ shape instead of an L, with the short unbroken piece as the _

You could still do it as a corner right-angle, but just expand the |and __ legs and put the small piece diagonal between them. having the 3 pieces of glass would make me feel like I was completely surrounded by tank when you stepped into the center of the |__

Sorry, no google sketchup here at work. Ascii art for you! hope that made sense.

The L shape would be awesome. Lots of tank volume and a unique shape. I'd sit right up next to it in my own little fishy wonderland for a long time.

LOL, you guys are funny. You gave me an idea though. I could use the glass from the two 90s I have and make a square tank with the glass facing the center. You'd have to crawl under the tank to get in the middle, but it would be a cool place for solitude.

Could just do 3 sides. Crawling around takes the fun out of things sometimes.

I've gone way off track with the purpose of this, so I'm going to force my way back to my original plan, so I'm going to get back to that. Though it pains me to not do something like these others.

The primary focus is something that anyone with limited know-how and skills could do on a low budget and minimal materials cost to expand an existing tank.

I'm going to purchase the side glass that I was going to buy anyway, so that I can make the tank with the two smaller windows and two larger windows that would be available for an unbroken tank.

This opens up a new thought on buying cheap broken tanks, especially ones with cracked bottoms.

I wouldn't worry about having the bottom butting up to the outer panels. It should hold just as well as the other way around.

Well, if we think in terms of finding a 55 gallon tank or having one, it becomes very cheap since the front and back glass on a 55 is 19" tall and just about every MFKer probably has one. For example, I just saw an ad on Craigslist, which I have yet to receive a reply from, for two 55s for $50 each.

If I wanted to squeak every gallon out of this on a budget, I could make twin 4' long tanks of whatever gallons that I wanted with minimal materials. For the average MFKer, turning an old 55 into even two 110s would be exciting. I know it makes me drool. I just happen to have about 6 or 7 tanks that I could apply this too.

The sandwich idea for the plywood between the dimensional lumber makes this build easy for the MFKer with even the most basic skills. So, this is how I see it:

low cost
low skills to build
high gallons
strong structure
adapts to whatever you have on hand (old tank size)
coating of choice (it doesn't matter what you choose, they all work with this)

I meant this website isn't cheapsimplefishkeepers.com Its monster fishkeepers. I say make the fish-cube with crawl-through access! (grin)

(Although I agree with you, and as soon as I get moved into the new house i'll be expanding an old 55g myself)
