Lava rock clogs. It's good for a while, maybe a year or so depending on everything lol. Basically anything that has a large surface area will work. I even put scrap cut up PVC pipe in mine. The bio balls are so damn expensive, that's why I'm watching this thread. If someone comes up with a viable alternative I'll give it a shot on my next build

Twelve bucks for only 8 pieces?! That's over $1 /pc! That seems pretty steep for woven nylon. If I need 2 cu ft worth I'm better off buying efimech from eheim.

i have used sponge rock go out and buy some from home depot like vava rock and smash it in to small rock it works great
