4 VATF 1 GATF Growout Community

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ime ur better off concentrating on fish. Keeping a group ime has led to disappointment several times. I keep one big gatf, around 16 inch by himself with. Choice stocking. Ive done the group thing in a 500 gal with a mess. The vatf constantly went after each other's eyes to render its counterpart blind. Never again! Wasted too much time and $$$ !!! Id suggest to keep with one animal, in my opinio gatf and grow it out. If resources allow keep 2 in separate tanks so u have a back up fish incase one passes on. One must remember that in the wild that gatf are solitary fish and vatf keep themselves in a achool of all having a common size.

Thanks for the info. As I have stated seems some people have had no success and some peope I have spoken to have had success. As needed i will move fish. I am doing this thread since seems to be not to many threads with people following through. I speak to peope on Facebook and Instagram who have had different experiences from alot of mfk members. So I'll keep the updates coming to show success or if it fall in line with the others unseuccesful experiences.

Interesting. That is consistent with my experience. I was wondering why my two smaller VATF, currently at 1', had each a damaged left eye. When they had been kept together, size 2"-3" to 5"-6" in a 240 gal, they quarreled. Perhaps that is one of their tactics - to go after another rival / enemy VATF's eyes?

I've separated them into separate 240's when I saw obvious domination of one over the other but it was too late for both their left eyes.

Yes they are. That happened a lot when they were kept in small tank together for too long. Some of them will have 1 blinded eye. That's why I believe there should be only 1 in the tank or none.

The new goliath has given in and taken to tilapia. Funny thing is the VATF all take pellets massivore and carnivore as well as tilapia. The gatf will only eat tilapia. Hopefully i will be able to convert the goliath to pellets as well.

They’re all looking great, Troy. And if you have a spare tank I’d suggest QTing the Goliath with a silver dollar or two to Pellet train it. My big guy is so obsessed with pellets now that he refuses to eat anything else lol. I’m thinking of ordering some monstervores lol.

great fish man. i have the exact same group 1 Gatf 5vatf .
all purchased a year ago from monster aquarium in ny. they were all 3.5 - 4". very skinny and can tell they were just imported in. i was thinking the same idea as you. 7x2x2 210 gal tank. 125 gallon sump. maxspect xf 250 dual pumps. so far as a group i have made it a year. 1 vatf jumped when i accidentally startled them. and i lost him but he was about 8". as for the remaining 4 . 3 are about 7" 1 at 8.5"
my Gatf is 8.5"
been one hgell of a year with having an issue with my 210. so after 3 months i had to tear down the 210. while everything was getting redone i had them in a 6ft acrylic 200 gal tank. until i got my main tank back up and running. they have been in the "holding" tank for 8 -9months now. aggression wise i can tell the gatf has become more dominant. the group of vatf basically goes after eachother all the time. so far no injuries. i also do feed them alot. keep lots of current. very clean water. and for precautions i threw in some silver dollars as dithers.
