Yeah no get rich quick schemes.... heard the bacterial in a bottle would end up competing with the regular bacteria and you would have to keep using it... don't know if that true though

I hope not or I'm in trouble :). Hopefully not though, my tanks has been cycled for about 2.5 months and I haven't run into that problem yet.

don't know why it replied twice but oh well, anyway went to the lfs to talk to the manager about holding the ebjd and she said no. and then tried to sell me the api quick start again. booo hooo

you were smart not going for it imo.. especially if they were trying to get you to buy that & the ebjd,,an ebjd and a newly cycled(or currently cycling) tank is a recipe for..a) soon to be dead ebjd
b) a way to get you to spend money on another expensive fish to replace the one that just died

Yeah big biz at its best

So far so good with the tank. Not getting any nitrite yet. Prob been cycling 6 or 7 days and wc almost everyday ammonia gets up there quicker than I thought between .25 and .5 adding declorinator/ conditioner with every wc. Adding directly to tank before putting in the clean water

looks good ,did I Tell you about PRIME dechlor?if you are low on dechlor & don't already use it,check it out at the lfs, it detoxifies ammonia(and it won't slow down the cycle)........It's good that the ammonia jumps ,that means you have plenty of fuel(fish ).. to cycle:)edit.....I LIKE THE WOOD

Yeah gonna get it once i use up the aquasafe.

My wife is b&tching because the water really smells. Is that because I replaced the carbon bag with filter floss. Will the smell die down once the bacterial is colonized

Once the cycle is complete the aquarium water smell should get better:)

The carbon does help keep the smell down, but after full coli

Ammonia just smells like $hit. Good job so far bro! Should only be another week or two until you move onto the nitrite part of the cycle. Which so you know in advance, is more toxic than ammonia so be ready to be doing bigger changes and also make sure you have adequate air-water diffusion because nitrites will lower the oxygen in the water I believe.

I don't know what level the nitrites constitute a wc. From what I know its .5 for ammonia and 20ppm for nitrate ? What about nitrite ?
