sump newbie, so pardon my ignorance ;)

i'm picking up my new used 90G acrylic tank tomorrow (hopefully). it has a built in center overflow so I might as well filter it w/ a sump.

i have a spare 40G acrylic tank lying around. how does acrylic compare to glass as far as being a sump. is 40 gallons good for a 90? thanks

I just picked up a 90 myself except it's AGA Glass and it's not drilled :irked: Lucky you though lol

It really doesn't matter if the sump is glass or acrylic, only in respect to the fact that you'll need to use a different type of adhesive when making the sump assuming you'll have baffles. 40g's for a 90 will be very nice, you'll get sick bio filtration depending how you set it up.

Good luck.

Brian.

so should I use acrylic or glass sheets to section the sump off? and what's the best adhesive to use in each case? and its only going to house one fish. so is a sump really necessary, especially a 40G? - sent via mobile device

bump...

so what's your oppinion on a 90 Gallon w/ only 1 fllowerhorn. should i go w/ a sump or canister filter?

me...reguardless of filtration....i like sumps so your tank water level doesnt drop 2...3...4..5..6 inches and leave a funky water line you cant get off. SO if you have room I would always do a sump.

I agree. Sump!

Sumps are where it's at. They increase your water amount making the tank much more stable. Do you need it for one fish? No, but it's a nice setup.

As to the glass or acrylic, it doesn't matter at all. I use acrylic because I can cut it and build it by myself.

HHhmmm...

I almost always push for a sump...unless it really isn't necessary.

Is money an object?

What everyone is saying about sumps is true...but...a 90g with one fish that size really doesn't need the extra water volume the sump would provide (as long as you keep up on the maintenance).

Match the divider material to the tank material, and silicone sealer for glass... solvent for acrylic.

Do you have a pump for the sump already? If not you may want to price compare a canister to the total of a sump.

Is the sump going to be enclosed or in the open (viewable) as sumps do have somewhat of a cool factor ;),

Evaporation is another point, covers will help, but.

Just a few points to consider.
