One such example was Swish, a 75 cm (30-inch) pacu owned for over 20 years by a Chinese restaurant (Kau Kau) in the Chinatown district in Seattle, Washington; one aquarium technician said of Swish, "He'd rub his body on your arms, kind of like a dog."[4]

Uhhh...it doesn't say longest ever anywhere...or that's it's in China. ArapaimaG has some over this age...

Im not arguing that it needed a bigger tank 40 years ago- I dont care what type of hardy garbage fish the guy kept- pacu, a RTC, or a GG, the fact that this guy has kept this fish that long says something was done right- Are you saying youve done everything right? You havent even had a fish last 10 years- good work
what bad press are you even talking about? Is the press hounding you for the scoop on pacus? Is the paparazzi rooting through your garbage cans to see how you keep your junky RTC?

oh it's on. . . .

Never said I've done everything right. I've been learning from mistakes for the past 25yrs like the rest of us. My tuskfish was pushing 7, admittedly I only owned him the last 4 of those, when Hurricane Ike wiped my tanks last year. I should have broken my tank down and taken him to ADG where we had 4 generators running. But alas I was duped like every other Houstonian and thought the power would come back on any second. Any second turned into 17 days. So theres a blatent example of me doing something wrong.

The bad press I'm refering to are all the goobers with the comments about improperly housed/husbandried (is that a word ) fish.

If all thats required is luck then why do we all dump all this money into our fish, when all we really have to do is have a rabbits foot, and avoid black cats?

Because we want to have happy healthy THRIVING fish numbskull.
Thriving and surviving are two completely different things. That fish has SURVIVED 40 years allegedly and is in NO WAY THRIVING all jacked up and stunted.

No, many fish do not live this long

Take icthyology and say that again. Most mega-fish live well past 40yrs.
As an MFKer I would hope that you know that. Hell the common goldfish record is 62yrs.

Are you comparing a pacu, to the gimp thats in your closet that you keep alive by luck?

WTF?

A great dane wont live 40 years whether it was kept in a crate by you, or it was running free owned by Mr Pacu

Ya know as I typed that I wondered if some douche would take it literally. I'm well aware of a great dane's lifespan. 10yrs is an ancient great dane.

I stand by my previous post. Thriving and surviving are two completely different things. Show me a happy healthy fish that old and I will commend you. Show me a ****ed up fish that old and I will be impressed by the toughness of the fish and the dumbluck of the owner.

oh. . . .
The fact that fish still die when keepers do everything right reinforces my luck theory.

Since you decided to flex for us, and declare that "its on" all youve done is use insulting terms that havent been used since the 50s(goober, numbskull) and explain that thanks to luck, youve been able to keep a fish alive for four whole years- good boy...no one cares-
No matter how obviously stupid you are, Im not going to start calling you retarded- because your mom told me thats what she calls you all the time-
I wont be posting on this thread again- so its no longer "on"

I heard that they can live a long time but I find it hard to beleave that a pacu can live 40+ years thats crazy

awww i just wana take him home and give him a 1k gallon pond (not that i have one...but its the thought that counts) and some nice veggies

You know how you'll be having a conversation with someone and the topic of goldfish in bowls, bettas in bowls, etc., will come up? And you'll be like (or at least I would), "Goldfish need at least 20 gallons per fish. And bettas need a heater." And the other person will be like, "Noooo... my uncle's cousin's friend's sister had a goldfish for nine years in a bowl." And I'm like, holy crap, because I can't even keep fancy goldfish alive for over two years in a 75 gallon tank with a huge canister filter. Some fish just tough it out. Some of them, even within species, are just hardier than others. This is one of the reasons why, in the wild, not all of them live to their ripe old age. So, this is just an example of that goldfish that lived for nine years in a bowl. (I know, goldfish can live far longer, but this is my example... go get your own! LOL) It's just one fish who happens to live in sub-par conditions. Is this how I keep my Pacu? No. Are my Pacu 40 years old? No, and they may never grow to be that old, even with the best of care. Some animals just live longer than others. If this story is true, then this is one hardy Pacu.

internet fighting is where its at... "40" year old pacu is not where its at..

and whos been feeding the editor of pawnation.com booze... how do you misspell a 4 letter word that is the whole subject of the story at hand.... (second paragraph thrid line)
