47g Column Project - Tank Journal

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Apparently the 'fluffy' thing is just a feather duster according to the people over on AC, so I guess I'm in the clear there.

You cant eliminate the bubbles comming out of the Aquamax skimmer if your water return is under water unless you drill a hole in the top and put some kind of tubing above the water so the air can escape before it goes out the tube.

Actually it looks like aquamaxx modified the original design. In the pictures online the output is just an elbow. On mine it is a 'T' which is open on top presumably to allow the air to escape.

I should have explained my skimmer woes better here. Its not so much the bubbles in the tank that are the problem, they are just a by-product of excessive bubbling/foaming thanks to using epoxy in the tank. Everytime I start the skimmer The chamber instantly bubbles over sending water and bubbles into the collection cup (no matter how high I place it) and water both overflowing back into the skimmer body and splashing though 4 tiny air holes in the top of the cup. Its frustrating to say the least. I'm going to do another waterchange tonight and try again.

Hope that all made sense - its been a long week

Well I did another 5g w/c and started the skimmer up again - still going crazy. Its been 8 days since I used the epoxy; I hoped things would be settling down by now. Here's a couple of pics of the situation...

No matter how high I raise the cup I'm getting the same result. Guess I'll just have to do a couple more waterchanges this weekend and try to ride it out.

A lot of times this will happen when skimmers are in their 2nd break in period as I call it. Lots of VERY light colored foam. I would just keep trying to remove it as much as possible. It will settle down.

thanks guys

I wasn't planning on jumping right into stocking, but my parameters checked out and I was under a bit of pressure to have something in the tank by my son's birthday party (nov. 6th) so I caved and picked up a few Turbo snails. Not much algae on the glass yet, but they've been enjoying the rock pile atleast.

Also, I came home today to see my glass covered in tiny white things which I believe I have identified as Hydroid Jellys, as well as an unbelievable number of green/brown thread-like objects which I cannot identify. Both can be seen with the snail below.

Any ideas?

Im going to say the green-brown is just algae and the white things... dunno

Cool, I was expecting an algae outbreak but I've never seen it present quite like this - solitary "hairs" so widely spaced. Guess the Turbos will have more food over the next few weeks :D

Watch your h2o quality, and be ready to get more cleaners if necesary.

It will take some fine tuning, but you will find a good balance, and probably never see algae ever again.

Algae has spread like wildfire, but water quality is still good so I'm trying to let it take its course naturally. Might order a full clean-up crew from reefcleaners.org in the next few days to help get it under control.

That said it was a big weekend for the tank. I've been looking for captive bred ocellaris clownfish, but my LFS couldn't tell me the source of his stock and all of the sites I looked at seemed to be sold out of small clowns (didn't want to order adults and risk ending up with 2 females). I happened to check craigslist for the first time in probably 6-8 months and I saw an ad for a place in central PA called Coral Reef Keepers. Not only do they stock and specialize in captive bred and sustainably harvested fish/corals but they also breed their own. I decided it was fate and made the 2.5 hour drive up there yesterday. Small place, but great stock and nice, knowledgable staff. In the end not only did I get my tank-raised clowns, but they were bred a couple hours away from me. I'm very satisfied

You can see in the pic that one of the clowns has an irregular pattern; I thought that was pretty cool. They had a really nice snowflake pair as well, but those'll be for my SPS tank one day :D

Then today I stopped by my LFS to pick-up some more salt and the owner let me know that the skunk cleaner shrimp I wanted was in. I wasn't really planning on getting him right away since I had just added the clownfish, but he's been really cool with me lately and I figured the bioload from 1 small shrimp wouldn't kill the tank so I brought him home as well. Unfortunately after acclimation he went into hiding pretty quick so no pictures yet.

Think that covers everything. Thanks for reading
