47g Column Project - Tank Journal

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Nice looking tank.

I might have missed it, but what are your nitrate and phosphate levels ? I'm guessing that due to some of your skimmer problems working it through the break-in period, some nitrates and/or phosphates built up resulting in aglae.

As your skimmer breaks in it should get better.

Great tank.

My CUC from Reefcleaners.org arrived today! Hopefully they can start to put a dent in the algae. I just ordered the 20g quick crew, but they seemed to be generous with the shipment...

Thanks! Just measured with my API tests : Nitrate 0, Phosphate 0.25ppm. I haven't gotten a chance to install RO/DI in the house yet, so I'm using that Nestle Pure Life ro/di from the store. Its not ideal since they add "minerals for taste" but I figure it beats the water from my tap :D Also using tropic marin reef salt.

I have noticed that the coralline has begun to spread, so I'll take that as a good sign. Maybe it will begin to outcompete the hair algae for nutrients?

Hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving

I added a Blue leg hermit crab last saturday (11.20.10). Unfortunately my camera battery was dead when I was acclimating him and he has dissapeared into the rockwork ever since. He is so small I probably couldn't get a decent picture anyway though.

On a more exciting note, my cleaner shrimp molted for the first time in my tank. I was at work when it happened (wednesday morning) but my fiance saw it and grabbed a couple pictures of the snails devouring his discarded exolskeleton.

I think I need to buy her a better camera for Christmas

Anyways, I thought that was pretty cool. Suprisingly he doesn't seem to be hiding any more than usual and I was able to grab a picture of him the next day at feeding time...

Also I am still experiencing excessive bubbling/overflowing with my skimmer. I took it apart completely tuesday night and scrubbed & rinsed everything hoping it would help. So far there hasn't been any change. Starting to wish I hadn't bothered with the skimmer and had just set-up a HOB refugium. I'll give it some more time, but if its not properly broken in by Christmas I will be considering other options I think.

Finally, here's a new picture of the clowns since they are always showing off when I bring the camera over...

Looks like your tank is doing great. The coraline is really starting to take off for you. Thats a very good sign. When the time comes for you to get a RO unit (if that's what you want), get a mid quality unit with a storeage tank and a booster pump. Up-grade you filters and membrain and you'll have a top of the line unit.

This is one of the better tank threads

I look forword to some more pics

+1

I've been trying to get a decent picture of these things for the past week, but this is the best I can do.

From what I can find online, I believe they are "Pineapple sponges" or "Scypha sponges." They definately seem to be spreading a bit, and prefer shaded areas. I'm wondering how they survived though, since I brought the LR home in a box with no water. Everything I've read says sponges die if they come in contact with the air? Either way they're a cool addition to the tank :D

I added the brittle stars back into the tank after taking pictures. In the second photo in post #28 (my previous post) you can see a pair of legs hanging out of the rock. They are all over the rock.
