Answer is 288

Can Some body prove this to be right :screwy:

48 ÷ 2 x 12 = 2

Multi and division equal neither come first. Proper is from left to right. Parenthesis pertain to what is inside the () not what is outside

This 48 ÷ 2 (9+3) is the same as this 48 ÷ 2 x (9+3) or this 48 ÷ 2 x 12 all equal this 288

() makes the 2(9+3) part of the equation one number

let's say 48/y

y=2(9+3), therefore you have to find y before you can divide it into 48

or z/y

z=48, y=2(9+3), still have to find y before you can divide it into z

that's what i'm sticking too

2(9+3) is also the same as (2x9+2x3) so
48 / (2x9+2x3) which = 2

very much so.

This is like saying "bake a cake"

To us, sure that makes sence you put everything together cook it in the oven, there go you.

But since we have no context, or understanding of what the question is. Its like, we understand stoves get hot, stores sell us goods, but you cant know WHICH to do first unless you know the order they need to be done in.

Sure you could cook it all then mix it...but im sure that'd turn out just perfect.

The only way we know to mix it, before we cook it is because we know that. This equation hasn't noted which needs to go first.

terrible analogy is terrible

yea andy, and if the stove came in 5 different parts, you have to put the stove together before you can bake it right?

whoa, my mind continues to be blown

well yes, that is true, if the equation is actually talking about the "parts" of the cake that we need to put together.

but we have no idea, its just numbers put together in a non-standard equation

I am not good with math but 80085 spells "boobs" on a calculator, hope that helps..

Incorrect inside the () is one number, outside has to go with left to right progression. As far as making it an algebraic equation does not pertain, if so then solve for y in this case y(9+3) with y=48/2

With your other example it would have to be written as (48/2x9 + 48/2x3) which equals 288.

With your method what is 1/2(9+3)? Is not 1/2 equal to .5?
