48x48 Workhorse "The Rig"

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I was leaning HFM primarily because it is much simpler to set up :) I don’t have your skills. The other big advantage is if I ever lose power the spongers are in the tank and still provide some bio. Between that and a heated drip my tank will easily sustain power outages.

Not sure it’s a great polisher. Will be 20ppi and running 3x turnover. Hoping the ultima will really be the mechanical side also.

What can't you reverse the flow of the hmf filter?
Have the air stone inside the lift tube and flip it upside down so it draws water from the bottom of the tank into the hmf filter and have the lift tube only 6 or 8 inches tall. Bam k1/hmf filter!

You lost me :)

Flip your lift tube so where the return elbow is at the bottom of the tank so it is in a capital L shape and have it about 6 to 8 inch tall and pit your air stone in the pipe to draw water from the tank into the hmf filter. Probably won't work I just thought it would be funny to say it
Draw water into the filter not return from the filter.

You sure that would work? HFM is supposed to draw water in slowly over a wide surface area. The elbow is curved to take advantage of the air to lift the water. Now I’m curious if I’m missing what your envisioning. Sounds cool

No such thing as any type of sponge that doesn’t polish. Some work better than others, sure, but all polish to some degree. HFM is large so the larger pore/open cell size is compensated by volume. I think it would make a difference.

The only way K1 would win out is if bioload was heavy which isn’t an issue for you or an Ultima.

It was more of a joke. If I was going to do anything close to what I was talking about I would have a pump that would draw water in to the hmf filter (pump inside with a intake pipe threw the hmf) with a venturie on the top

Oh gotcha, my bad. I would probably do the same. I’ve done that with matala mat too. Works great

This things boiling great now. We need another 1/2” in water level and apparently some black egg crate on the teeth..

Also need to figure out how to do the drip overflow now. The tower is a 1/2” higher water level than the tank and turbulent. Oversight on my part.
