48x48 Workhorse "The Rig"

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yes there are lids, I use 3/4 insulation styrofoam. You can wrap the sump with it as well as it will silence the knocking around hum of the K1.
Great tip on the lids. I’ll have to pick some up this weekend and wrap my sump.

Ultima plumbing is planned out and parts ordered. I’m doing an over-under 1.5” intakes through the back wall. Each with union ball valves to keep everything adjustable.

Also testing a new concept with a diverter valve for an auxiliary backwash system.

Normal operation: top open, bottom restricted
Backwash operation: top closed, bottom open
Auxiliary backwash: top closed, bottom closed, diverter valve open

This helps tremendously!

Everything’s moved so the stand gets knocked out tomorrow. Goal is get it sanded, painted, top deck and floor installed.

Picked up the sheets to mount on top of the plywood floor that make it spill proof. Grabbed enough to finish the other two stands we’re working on as well.

Trying to match the 600 build. Below is how that stand came out using the same materials.

Nice! How tall is that stand? The ultima looks tiny next to it.

Btw have you sorted through how you are going to make water flow from the overflow boxes to the main tank and at what rate?

Stand is 42” tall. This tank and the 600 are both 66” in height. In the future will go next to one another.

No I haven’t decided exactly how but going to use two small pumps to run the towers. No head height and submersible means we can get away with two small pumps for large turn over ratio. Any pump recommendations?

JK47 JK47 the smallest submersible pumps I’ve found are the new eheim compacton and tunze. Tunze is high quality but not cheap. Those specific compacton I’ve read are not made from Germany and their typical quality. Jebao makes the some really cheap pumps but I’m sure you know their reputation.

What I plan on doing is probably using jetlifters if I go HMF. In the link below swisstropicals now has a version that moves 500gph. You can run them off the same air pump provided it’s strong enough that you will use on k1 and they will take up significantly less room than a pump. The downside is that to get the flow the spout needs to be half exposed to the air but not sure how you’d do this with overflow boxes. But because of how you position them they do give awesome surface agitation.

The other thing I plan on doing is running a dry standpipe that I run all air tubing into the hmf corner. I’m sure this will make some folks cringe but I’ve see someone do that. It will let me hide all tubing for a clean look.

Go time... have multiple coats and a wall to get through today so I’ll skip the progress pics until it’s done tonight.

So far it’s coming out great though. Sneak peek:

Just an FYI, if you find a local paint shop nearby, you can probably get them to sandblast that frame for a pretty cheap price. Will save a ton of time with the electric sander.

I immediately regretted that sander decision... I’m on a budget for this tank so we have to stretch $$$ where we can and put in the work myself.

Couldn’t be happier to have that out of the way though... before and after sanding

Paint is drying now. I’ll get pics up after I’m done with the wife’s wall

I can definitely understand that. I’m glad you got it all finished up and it does look great.
