I think the exodons would be cooler in a 55 since they are small and fast. More length to swim back and forth across the tank. You could always watch some videos on youtube to get a feel for each kind of tank.

how about a 46 gallon bowfront?

Personally, I don't like 55's too much because of how tall they look. I love wider tanks because it gives me more room to aquascape. It also adds another dimension to the tank. I work in a LFS that uses 50 breeders as well as 55 gallon aquariums for trade-in fish. Most of these fish are 10+" and in 55 gallon tanks, they will bump into each other when they try to swim past each other and little fights will ensue.

Exodons are the only fish that I wouldn't recommend in wide tanks since you won't be able to see them as well. I would still get a 40br for them, but then you can build up the gravel and rocks in the back really call to create a cliff-like look and still leave the fish with as much turning area as a 55.

40's are also cool too, because many times when growing out monster fish, they can start to nose rub in narrow tanks.

It all depends on what exactly you are looking for. If you love aquascaping and decorating the tank, or even plants a 40 gallon tank would be much better. If you want the fish to be able to have longer side to side swimming space while sacrificing front to back, the 55 is a good way to go.

IMO you really can't keep a bigger fish with either tank, your looking at 10-11" max. Boils down to which you like best.

like i said in your other thread, both tanks are "limited". i had the 40g, sold it, and now i have a 55g. for me, i like it more then the 40g because of the length. the 40g is 36" long, and the longest single light you can get for it is 30" meaning about 3" on each side isn't lighted as apposed to the 55g with the 48" length and 48" light. but maybe i'm just too picky.

but then again it's all a personal preference, i say go to petco tomorrow and look at the tanks side by side and then decide which one suits you better. it's usually easier to decide when they are right there in front of you versus on paper.

Can't buy a 36" light? :screwy: I've got two of them sitting a top my 125g.

Right now I'm kinda leaning towards a 40 but the 55 it not ruled out. I've decided I want a spotted bullhead so I'm debating which would be better. Both have a area of 576 sq inches on the bottom and the 40 is eider but the 55's longer so with a bullhead I think wider might be better so I can have lots of hiding spots. Thanks

You may want to check your math.
